Gear indicator.

I have started to have a bit of a look at how to connect it. Unfortunately the sensors are a little too thick to be applied right next to the gear lever where it is vertical.

The only other option I can see is to attach the sensors underneath the body along where the gear lever shaft goes into the gearbox, but not sure what is the best way to proceed.

Any ideas? :)

Hey Shaun,
It's a lot of work to get into the back of the gearbox.
I had to drop the exhaust to replace the seal on the gear selector shaft you speak of.
This project would be a whole lot easier on a traversely mounted inline four (CBR)
It's unfortunate that the ST has a longitudnally mounted Vee four.  :(
Get under there, have a go and secure your place in the kingdom of all things ST

I have a bit of an idea of where to install it all relative to the gear lever/shaft. I will have a crack tomorrow, take some piccies in the process and do a write up when (if) I get it all done.

Edit: I have done the installation of the sensors





and the soldering to the display wiring,



and also mounted the display, next to the digital speedo.


The digital indicator is hanging below the electronic speedo in the middle left of the picture. I eventually mounted it on top of and on the right hand side (from the sitting position) of the digital speedo.

Only 3 more wires to connect (positive, negative and the neutral wire)

Is there any good place on the left hand side of the bike to get at the neutral wire? By neutral, I believe it means the one that links to the neutral light on the dash. The + and - I will wire into the accessories circuit.

I don't have squillions of dollars to burn on that! + I like having fun installing things.

Anyway, accessed the neutral wire from behind the meters. According to Mr Clymer, that one was the 2 greens 1 red lot.



Hooked into that and sent it down to the rest of the wires.



Now all there is to do is connect + and - and to find the best way to mount the magnet to the gear lever.

Should I add an additional small fuse to the active wire before patching it in? The live wires going to the gear indicator are seriously thin and they will probably burn before the 10A fuse I have in the section of wiring I was going to patch into will pop. Or should I just bung it in? Thoughts?

All connected up now and bike re-tupperwared.

Moving the magnet up and down near the sensors gives the correct "gear" movement and it is detecting neutral correctly (saying gear 0, which is correct I guess ;) ).

Now just tinkering with the best way and position to mount the magnet onto the gear lever, but pretty much done.

I will let you all know how it goes out on the road.

Took it out for a spin and so far so good. It is displaying the correct gear and neutral.

Now to see if it stands the test of time and many shifts. :)
