Buying My First ST1300
« on: May 31, 2018, 09:46:32 AM »
Hi all hope all is well, it has been many years since i have been on, actually been a while since have ridden due to life commitments. Now i have the opportunity
to jump back on and am looking for a bit of advice as am looking at a pre loved ST1300. Im wondering what to look out for when looking at the 1300's
as have owned a few 1100's and have a fair idea when purchasing those. Im looking at a 2008 burgundy 1300 which has 104,000 kms on her and is in
reasonably good condition. It has a few marks here and there but after all its 10 yrs old. Is there anything in particular i should be weary of and pay special attention to
when inspecting this bike.Thanks all.

Welcome back In agro69  :clap :think1  I would be looking at any service history of the bike - If they have been done regular, then the bike will be good for a lot more kms yet  :thumb
Cheers

I have a 2008 ST1300 with 84,000 kays on it, so mine isn't far off that burgandy one.  I haven't had to touch anything except the oil plug and rear trans plug.  If it starts and runs smoothly and quietly and revs without rattles and fuss the motor is probably sound.  There's an on-going discussion on the Forum about possible valve sticking in a younger ST13, but that's far from certain and unheard of in the hundreds of ST13s that have passed through these pages.  There's a factory-recommended valve check, I think it's at 120,000 but anyone who has had it done found no requirement for adjustments.  Put it on the centre stand and spin the back wheel in neutral to check the drive train for noise- again, not an issue we've heard of.  If you can pull the back wheel, check the splines for grease.  There are occasional issues mentioned in the Forum regarding the FI light.  If the light goes out after a couple of seconds of turning it on, and stays out, it's fine.
The fact is, they are very reliable and if it's going fine, a complete oil and filter change will set it up for many more thousands of kays.  Stinky Pete's has just passed 200 thou with no problems, and there are examples in USA exceeding the quarter mill mark.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Hi agro69 and welcome to OzSTOC from SA.   :hatwave     Good Service History, Garaged, and Not Crashed is probably all the info that you would need.   The engines are bullet proof, so it's overall condition from lack of care, or being left in the weather would be the turnoffs.    Good luck with your search.
