ST1100 Handlebar Risers

Has anyone put risers into their ST1100 Handlebars? I find i am just sitting over a touch.

any suggestions or information?

Tack' put me onto buying the top set of handlebar clamps and some longer bolts, you then put the two new clamps upside down on the bottom clamps then clamp it up again. hope that makes sense, did wonders for mine.  There is something on one of the ST sites but can't find the info.

I bought a set of risers that go on top of the originals to give about 22mm of rise. I find that I'm sitting a little bit more upright which suits me. One thing you'll find is the plastic handlebar cowl will sit higher and thus the keyhole will sit about 22mm above the ignition switch. I got over this by removing the cowl completely, it doesn't look too bad especially since I put a chrome cover over the steering stem nut to tidy it up.

I got them from the local bike shop they had them in the offroad section you just need to make sure they have the right bolt spacings for the Honda.

Not on the ST, but I had some Convertibars on my FireBlade.  They cost a bit but did the job.

Dunno if it's an issue on the ST, but on the FB I needed to get hold of a longer clutch cable and brake hose (even though the info on the bars said they were not needed).  Might be worth checking out before doing anything, as these sort of surprises are annoying.

Streak the method used is called the "Flip Clip".  I know you're a member of the Yank forum so send Uncle Phil a PM if you want more info, but I have done it to my bike and have since done about 15 000km and love it.  Simple purchase for $5 each at your local wreckers and four high grade bolts and two hours if you haven't had your plastic cover apart before.  The below link has some info on the Yank forum including a little input from Uncle Phil.

Would any of you have photos of what your various types of risers look like (yes I get a little pretty boy with my bike) I am just worried it will look dicky with the plastic cover

The flip modification is the easiest, unless you can find a wrecked police bike as it had higher handlebar mounts to start with, and I think the bars are higher. First time I looked at a civilain model I was surprised at how low the standard bars are.

The Police bars are just about right for me, I've not seen a standard 1100 to compare them with though.

My risers, sorry about the pic quality.





The chrome cap on the steering head nut is the end off an old set of cruiser grips.

I had to reroute the brake line slightly but it still reaches ok.

Arvo Graham...

The method I used to raise my bars was altogether different and with hindsight (was 15 years ago), I think the method illustrated  by 'Bikebear' is better way to go. (I note the 'unbrako' hex head bolts. :thumb)

What I did to get the eventual ideal height for me was to remove the raisers completely and then place pieces of wood of varying thickness between the lower aspect of the handle bar and the top of the triple clamp and gaffer taped them into place (bike on the centre stand).

Then over the next few days I would go out and sit on the bike periodically taken note of where the mirrors were and the top of the windscreen (mine is bog standard), in relation to my head / eyes. I eventually settled for 35mm added height.

I to had to re-route the brake master cylinder  to prevent the hose stretching...I achieved this by simply going the other side of the right stanchion (ABS variant).

Yes I get more wind noise but no buffering...ear plugs solve this.

I have not noticed any difference of air flow over my hands...still in the slipstream of the mirror covers.

I find that the standard bars on the 1100 are quite ok. I'm about 178cm (5' 10") and I'm almost sitting upright as it is.

I just realised that with the current handle bar set-up I can only just see the mirrors above my hands...if I raised the handle bar any higher I would not see the mirrors at all!

How did the police see the mirrors with those massive risers on there?

Your bars must be set awfully low then......mine are as I bought the bike and the bottom of the hand grips are about inline with the top of the mirror housing

I look below the handgrips into the mirrors

No problems me me in using the mirrors with the standard police risers - I am 5'8". I look in the mirrors and see below the bars

I think I need to see a riders POV picture as I'm having a hard time coming to grips with having to look under my arms to see the mirrors and being happy about it.

As you pointed out mine must be fully lowered as I'm 179cm and the mirrors are visible in an upright position with bottom of the mirrors lining up with the tops of my knuckles.
As it is my first impression of the ST1100 was the mirror position was too low.

Sounds like your handle bars are lying too far to the rear, you shoud have the mirrors top just under the handle bars, and be able to see the mirrors easily with a quick downward glance.

Streak got mine from Aussiebiker at Noosa, 30mm rise....half an hour to fit, all Tupperware goes back in place, no need to re-route cables.....

Hopefully this will give you an idea.........the bike was wet from unexpected rainfall so I couldn't sit on it but the view in the mirror is close to my usual riding position.



I've taken a side shot as well showing alignment with mirror housing for stock (or at least how it was set up from previous female owner) handle bar position.
