For those of you, who like me, work heavily off your credit card please take note.
I went out today to buy oil and a filter to give the wing an early oil change before heading for MacKay on Friday.
Luckily I had some cash on me as my credit card wouldn't work, tried it at another place with a similar result so off I went to my local ANZ branch. The officer there rang the credit card people and was told that there had been a suspicious amount of $4 charged against my card so they had cancelled my card. As I had not had an email or sms notifying me of this I asked when they were going to, oh the when we worked through things was the answer. I will receive a new card in 5 business days, really helpful given I head for MacKay on Friday. The card that was cancelled is actually a secondary with Theresa the primary card holder. Recently after realising that in the worse case scenario if something happened to Theresa I would not have  a credit I applied for and have just received an extra credit card with me as the primary holder. So I still have a credit card and it will now give me access to ATMs but as I head across the Nullarbor I will be carrying backup cash and in future will always have two credit cards.

I always carry back up cash with me on my trips.  My card is often used to secure a booking for accommodation but depending on what the places system is usually pay cash when I arrive.  I had one real surreal experience in Warrnambool the day after last year's Balranald RTE.  My facebook status update from that day reads:

This is where I should have been staying tonight. When I rocked up there was no one behind the desk, just a monitor with a girl wearing a headset on it. She asked my business so I told her I had a reservation and gave her details. They told me they cancelled it because they couldn't process a credit card. My reservation said pay on arrival and I could have shown her it if she was behind a desk. She said in is a remote service so no one is ever here. Then she said put the cash in a white envelope. I asked about getting a receipt and my change and she'd endeavour to get it to me tomorrow. Given that I often leave at 0600 that probably wouldn't work, said turn it in and walked out.

Had I know what was going to happen I would have worn the gopro on the chest belt when I went in.

Is'nt the cashless society great till it don't work. Always carry a bit of cash just in case.

Having once arrived at Balladonia to find they had not had credit card access for several days I always carry some cash but not as much as I will be carrying on Friday. It would be interesting to fill up with petrol say at the Nullarbor Roadhouse and not be able to pay for it or get any money until you can get to a bank

We only have debit cards but can face the same issue.

Sometimes your bank may be down and generally the EFTPOS terminal will print out a receipt that you need to sign and it won't process until the business does their banking. Maybe in some remote places that does happen but they might prefer to not process anything.

Coles/Woolworths generally let everything go through except cash outs and when it goes back online the transactions on hold get processed.

When I was at Coles Express we had to get out the old card swiper and write everything on a docket. Had to make sure you got the right docket to suit that card being swiped. The banks I have been told have taken back those card swipers because they probably had to enter everything manually.

petrol say at the Nullarbor Roadhouse and not be able to pay for it

I stopped at Nullabor rd house once, when it was still set back a K from the highway, and tried to pay for fuel with a $50.00 note. They had never seen one before, as they were new. A regular truckie vouched for the validity of the note :O

I don't have any 'CREDIT' cards, only debit, sometimes I don't have any cash on me either..
I'd like to see someone suck the fuel out I'd put in,,

We probably all have CC horror stories.  I had mine refused at a remote servo one day, but always carry a second card and used it.  It turned out Citibank had cancelled my card because of a suspicious large transaction on my card in the US.  I had to wait for a replacement card in the post, and in the meantime, use my alternate which fortunately held up OK, since I was away for a while.

Mine's been cancelled a couple of times due to several US transactions booking holidays and accommodation. whilst I normally sleep. Not too clever these crims.

They then on-sell the holidays and accommodation to make money.

The ones booked against my cards were all cancelled quickly.

I had some music CD's in a London store purchased on my CC. Westpac asked me to call them as they thought it was suspicious, and then cancelled the transactions upon learning the truth.
I have had occasions when a card wont work but I've always carried more than one card, so I just use another one.
