Service Rip-offs ..............
« on: December 11, 2019, 11:27:11 AM »
....... at the last major service was supposed to have changed clutch fluid, so I think I paid for nothing ......

Well where do I start?  Probably with the earliest......that I can remember.

Back in 1988, we had a Goodyear Tyre & Brake franchise across the road from our RTA office.  The Jaffa (a burnt orange, chocolate brown interior ZJ Fairlane) needed new tyres.  Sale on at Goodyear, good price agreed (they has an oil change and new filter for something like $20 - yeah do that too), car dropped-off for the day, pick-up car at end of day.

Walking up driveway of Goodyear, can see a spark plug hanging out the side of the 302 V8 sump, "What's that?" I ask. "Oh, the mechanic stripped the sump plug thread, it's already max oversize, it'll cost $200 / $400 to supply and fit a secondhand / new sump.  "We aren't responsible because the previous mechanic had put the sump plug in incorrectly."  "WTF?"

"Anyway, it's okay to drive home now, bring it back tomorrrow and we'll fix it."

Workmate and I drive home, drop him off to pick up his car, over the road is the Watsonia Shell Garage.  Hmmmm .... I need a second opinion.  "Yeah, we can look it it tomorrow."

Next day meet workmate, leave Jaffa, pick-up at end of day, all fixed.  "Only needed a No. 1 oversize sump plug mate, that'll be $4.50 for the plug and 10 bucks for five litres of oil."

I've never set foot in a Goodyear dealer since.

Had one of my supervisors take his Falcon to the local Ford dealer for the scheduled service. He diceded to wait in the car and read the paper until time for the service.

After two hours, he had finished the paper so decided to see what the delay was. Dealer said Oh, you are back,, your car is ready to go, that will be $NNN.NN thanks. Supervisor flew off the handle at that, and read the riot act.

On Monday a letter was sent to Sydney Ford head office, a reply came back saying that the dealer had been royaly ripped a new one and that if he took his car back in it would be serviced for free. Also, all services for the next year would be free. If there were any problems, to let them know and the dealership would lose its franchise..

Wow.  Meaning that they hadn't even touched the car?  That does take the cake.

Wow! That is astonishing!  You really need to find a good guy and stick with him.  I think I would be a bit wary of letting that Ford dealer touch my car, even for free!

For you, Steve, and anyone else in the Brendale area, I highly recommend Northside EFI for car maintenance.  They've done the right thing by me for decades, and his mechanics are highly experienced.  EFI run their own trade school to top up the Tech College course.

Back in the early 80's I bought a Suzuki DR250 from our local dealer.
Came time for it's first service so in it went.
When I picked it up later that afternoon there were bolts cross threaded and chewed out and the engine was rattling like a tin full of marbles.
Apparently they didn't have the service manual for my model DR so went by the enduro model specs. That explained the rattling but not the damage to bolts etc.
Needless to say I spat the dummy resulting in the owner phoning me that night.
They ended up sorting it next day but I've never bought anything or had my bikes serviced there since.

This one happened in the 1987 in Winnellie in the NT, at a very well known High Performance Workshop that just happened to be on the road to Hidden Valley Raceway.

I owned at the time a 1972 HQ Monaro with a heavily worked 350 chev. The motor was putting out 400hp + at rear wheels, with another 200+ Nitrous available.

The motor had been freshly rebuilt due too a failed Magna filter (oil filter), and scoring of bearings.

The business that rebuilt engine went into receivership, so I luckily got car out and back to running condition less some parts they decided too steal.

Car was running rough so took it to said performance workshop for analysis remedy.

Their analysis was the valve springs had lost their tension, and the heads needed to be rebuilt at a cost of about $3600 from memory. The analysis for that cost me $600 car still running like shit remember.

Having just spent over $$$ in parts alone in the rebuild, I opted for a second opinion from a diesel mechanic who mainly repaired forklifts.

The problem was the harmonic had slipped and the car needed to be timed by ear which was normal for that car, but the marks were way out and the said expert used that mark. I think he charged me $100 to get car running properly.

The motor threw a rod a month later due too when the conrods were attached to the pistons the brand on one was upside down, when the motor was pulled down that brand name was around right way (no lubrication or very little).

I then had car shipped too NSW to have brand new engine built worth $$$$, as would only trust people I knew. Picked car up 6 months later and never had engine problems till sold in 1991 for about $1000 more than engine cost.

No I don't own car anymore, it was last seen driving around Wollongong 2005. :'(

Poor old pensioner now on 2003 ST1100P

Just did google search and couldn't seem to find that Performance Centre listed.

I love Carma

Just had the first service done for my Ford Ranger. Appointment was for 10:30 and service would take a couple of hours, should be ready by 1:00. Decided to wait and read my book as I dont live in the area and had nothing I could do there.
At 12:30 I see them drive my car into the service area and at 1:15 I go and ask for my car. At 2:15 I angrily go and ask for my car back as I had an appointment that afternoon. I finally get it back at 2:30 with apologies and a 10% discount, however was told that the software update procedure showed no updates available. I expressed annoyance because I knew that it was 2 years out of date (a 1 year old car).

Wrote a complaint email to dealership and a week later I get a call from the service manager apologising again for the delayed servicing and offering to personally take care of the software update when I take it back. He also tells me that they dont normally do software updates on vehicles as its not part of the service schedule from Ford, even though Ford state on their new car website that ANNUAL updates until 2024 are provided with all new vehicles.
Yet to be resolved...
