Hi Gents,
              Thought i would post about adding a Ram Ball Mount to my 1996 ST1100.

When i started this, i was emailing with the USA site, then i found a good Dealer in Australia, Southern Insight, his name is Paul and is a very helpful bloke, he reccomended i go for a handle bar mount rather than a Clutch or brake cap Mount, stronger and not as high was his thoughts.

i bought a RAM U-BOLT Mount RAM-B-149ZU (mounting Bracket)

and a RAM-HOL-AP6U RAM HOLDER for Apple 3GS iPhone

Total Cost Delivered was: $54.00

in the mail turned up two days later after ordering:




I took it a step further when i got it, i actually took the front bracket off the Clutch Lever bracket, and bolted it on there, and when i did so i ended up with a very ungainly amount of thread showing:



So off to Bunnings i went and found some rubber caps that i cut down to put in between:




and presto it looks 10 times better:



and all mounted up, it looks good, and holds my phone nicely!




all i have to do know is wait for my bluetooth units to turn up and i am onto my next little project

Hi Streak................do you use your iPhone 3GS to navigate with, and if so, do you use a special application to do so ???...........and if you do.................what application do you use  ???
I'm interested as I also have the 3GS and have been wondering if it's possible to do this rather than put out for a GPS  ::)

it has served me well so far, but i have not used it on the bike properly, cost about 40 dollars

I know there is a iPhone TomTom app, I think from memory it's around $100.
I'd imagine it would use up alot of the memory though. compared with the "Maps" which has a bit of lag...

Put my Ram mount there lastnight, with my GPS60Csx fitted to it. dont like the position as its to far forward to see easily, and my left hand keeps hitting it.

Yes it does, I have not tested it with the bike and my headset yet, so stay tuned and I will report the results, had worked well in the car

you may need to look at how to operate the iphone with golves on.  there are a couple of solutions on the web from special gloves to special thread needing to be sewn through the finger tips. enjoy

The blue tooth unit on my helmet covers all that, phone answering, skipping songs, volume the whole box and dice :)

The google map app works well but is unspoken directions, and does not really help with coming up to corners, I have not tested navigon on the bike yet, but have full plans to, it has worked well in the car so far

I would turn the voice off anyway. I don't like being told where to go.
I'm in a truck all day around Perth, so I have a basic idea where places are. I't would be different in a larger, stranger city like Melbourne or Sydney.

This is what I use - mine is called Co-Pilot. I'd rate it a 7 out of 10. It works great most times.

It also allows me to mount the phone on a ram mount on top of my triple clamp. This also gives me the phone, the mp3 player, the nav, and search for motels, servos etc when in unfamiliar territory.

I wish Google maps had spoken directions on iPhone, like your Nokia does with Ovi maps.

I have a Nokia phone, it uses Ovi maps which are free and current, it has spoken directions, traffic alerts, speed camera etc etc....I used it on the W.A.. trip to get throught places like Melb, Adelaide (was a god send) and for finding places in Perth....it has all the locations like petrol, accom and the like...i even use it in the car when I can't find an address...

I have used copilot on a HTC phone. Agree with Diesel's assessment. Good POI, navigation is ok.  There are lots of those smart phone GPS apps around.

I have tested a few on a dedicated GPS as part of an alpha test program for navig8r.  Some look flash but the mapping may be lacking, and updates costs a bit in the long run.  In general they will get you to somewhere unfamiliar, but look at the road and signs!
