Clutch Plates Stuck
« on: June 02, 2024, 12:32:11 PM »
G'day Fellas,
I haven't used my ST1100 for 6 months after working on it and my son's VN Commodore Ute, this morning I started her up but it stalled every time I selected 1st gear, hope I don't have to pull the clutch cover etc off, is there a fix please??
Joe.

One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!
Remember there are 7 days in a week and Someday isn't one of them!

Did you happen to have the side stand down (or partly down) when you've selected a gear?  :think1

The side stand switch might be damaged. Its could be detecting a sidestand not down condition.

G'day,
thanks for your replies but no side stand down or partially down, bike upright, it's definitely a seized clutch  due to not using it, I will fix the clutch on squeezed position for a few days and see if that helps, plus I will get the motor  really hot, it may free up and not stall the motor when I select 1st gear,
Joe.

Same happens with the 1100 which isn’t used frequently, I just put it in gear and rock back and forth till clutch plates release. Lately I have been putting a rubber band around the clutch lever when parked for extended periods .

Hey thanks JD, sounds like a good idea, today I will hold the clutch in and get the motor hot then try your suggestion, I had a Yamaha 650 (early 70's) which did the same,
thanks again, Joe.

Hey JD,
I fixed it thanks you you telling me holding the clutch in for a time helps.
I actuated the clutch leaving it while I ran up the motor till it was hot then let it stand for an hour, then started again and selected 1st, no worries this time so I will actuate the clutch when leaving it stand for some time,
I have attached a pic of my ST1100 powered Trike, a scratch build,
Cheers Joe

Very nice 👍. Don’t know much about trikes, is the drive to the front or rear?

It's RWD , I always wanted a Clubman 7 but couldn't afford one unless I built one, then the Transport Dept made if too difficult with really strict rules, but more relaxed M/Cycle rules so I built a 3 wheel Clubman, it's registered as a M/Cycle, my son is the driver and I'm passenger (he is better) we head west into the Hinterland Mt Glorious and Samford valley,

Hey JD,
just before I go, I thought you may be interested in this https://www.tripodcars.com/  it's known as a reverse trike, much more M/Cycle than mine, it's really a Clubman chassis right up to the rear firewall this it is M/Cycle, if I had know about them I would have built one, cheaper and easier, there is a video of Andrew (builder) roaring through the hills in the menu on the right.
He doesn't build them anymore but there is one near me,

cheers Joe.

Yes, it certainly won't win any beauty contests, but (IMHO) neither would the ACE.  Whilst the ACE has some classic styling and charm, it is also a mixture of bumps, curves and add-ons.

Then there is the Slingshot.  Available in the US as a rental, that could lead to an interesting afternoon.

I always thought one of these would be nice...  :thumbs

Morgan have bought out a later model but unfortunately its Ford powered... :fp

Back in the mid 80's I attended the Mother Hardys Rally out Valencia Creek way (Victoria) and this guy turned up with a Morgan replica which was powered by a Moto Guzzi engine.
Apparently he drove it all the way from Perth unregistered!
Ahhh, the good ol' days!  :thumbsup

Or this.

This one is  ST 1100 powered, but I have also seen them with CX650 engines.

More Morgan in design.

Two thumbs up, doesn't come any better!!
Hey fellas my Trike drive shaft uses just the ST1100 UJ and is welded to a 2" tube, the assembly is 850mm long and goes  between the motor and reversing G/Box, after seeing a ST1300 drive shaft I could do better than my drive shaft BUT will a ST1300 drive shaft/UJ plug on to ST1100 I.E. are the two engines output splines the same, they won't be I just know it.

Cheers Joe.
