Rego survey.
« on: June 19, 2024, 07:25:30 AM »
From Damien MRAA

CTP SURVEY: This survey could save vehicle owners significant amounts of money in the future. To June 3, 2024, just 1033 people had done the compulsory third party (CTO) vehicle insurance survey. Mostly males over 45 from Victoria and Tasmania. We need a lot more. To make a strong case for improvements to CTP we need over 2000 car, motorcycle and scooter owners to answer the questions. It doesn’t take long. It is anonymous. If you have not done the survey, please do. If you have please encourage others to do it.

It's an old survey.

It's still current though so hopefully members aren't put off and will do the survey.
I actually did it some time back but I just did it again...  :whistle

Just reading first post again, initially I was reading it as the survey was compulsory. But yes third party insurance in WA is actually part of our rego and hasn't been separated as I think it has in other states.

Just had to do the rego on my bike 424.05, CTP portion was 270..

In WA, there is no separate CTP fortunately, so it keeps the cost down.

Not separated in Victoria, not sure about other states and territories.

Just got a renewal notice for ST1300 no. 2, 12 months rego just shy of $700, CTP is just north of $600.  I think Rusty's ST1300 (and for other outside the metro area), there are some savings.

In Victoria, our motorcycle rego is made up of the registration fee and the TAC (compulsory third party insurance)...plus the usual add-ons such as insurance duty and service charges.
Included in the TAC component is a motorcycle safety fee, which is currently $78.10.
This is a charge that no other State or Territory charge and is "supposedly" to be used to fund motorcycle safety initiatives.
Like everything these days though, there doesn't seem to be too much accountability for how or even whether these funds are actually being spent on motorcycle safety initiatives.  :||||

My rego including CTP (third party insurance) last year were as previously stated:

Rego for mine are:

Goldwing $284·23 + CTP goes to $394·64
Versys $284·78 + CTP goes to $401·07
Xmax $272·84 + CTP goes to #379·88*

*this was the previous financial year whereas the top two are more recent.

CTP is $110ish for all.

In Queensland you nominate your CTP provider for the vehicle  and it then comes all together with your rego bill
If you want to change providers you notify them and fill out forms before it is due
Don't ask how much. Robyn handles that side

What pees me off with the TAC (besides the motorcycle safety tax) is that they sponsor sporting events and clubs etc etc.
It's not as if we have a choice to go with any other company so why the need for advertising???  :well
All the money they waste could be better used by reducing premiums or diverted into fixing our disgusting rural road network...

My biggest issue is, that I can only operate 1 vehicle at a time so it should be the driver that has the TAC charge, not all the vehicles.

That assumes all vehicles are only operated by their owners.

My Dad always thought that an extra ten cents a litre should cover it. That way it would be cheap to have the small, economical car for everyday, and the big V8 parked in the shed and taken out when needed for towing the van or boat. Instead, anyone who needed to tow occasionally had the V8 and used it for everything. This was back in the '70s, when things were a little more basic, and Dad was a pom with green tendencies. Only ever had four cylinder vehicles.

That assumes all vehicles are only operated by their owners.

It could be attached to your license just as easily.

Why should I pay for CTP to drive a work vehicle?

Another issue with it being attached to your licence would be the up-front cost, especially if you have a 10-year licence...
I'd have to take out a mortgage on the house to pay for it... :rofl

Why should I pay for CTP to drive a work vehicle?

If you drive for a living, you claim all the costs of your license on tax, including the CTP portion, or in those circumstances, the company pays for the vehicles it owns. Attaching to your license just makes it easier and cheaper for you to have multiple vehicles.

This is my ST in rural SA. As you can see, the CTP costs vary between insurers, and the government charges also vary, which I can't see a reason for.

Only a dollar or so, but still...

It could still be set up so that you pay for the license in one transaction, and keep the CTP on an annual or bi-annual basis.

The way insurance premiums rise, they wouldn't want you to lock it in for ten years anyway, but it would be nice if you could.

Or...you could just do something like this: https://www.drive.com.au/news/infrastructure-victoria-recommends-axing-car-rego-for-new-system/

Downside though is those that live out in the sticks and drive a lot of k's would end up paying a shi#load!  |-i

Down here in Tassie the Rego for my 1100 for 12 months was $ 702 , $ 549 of that was third party insurance, my car Rego is cheaper than the bike because the car goes on the number of cylinders where the Bike is on Capacity ( CC’s ) . Out of that $702 the actual registration fee is only $81.88 .

12 months rego this morning was $586 in Qld. I opted for 6 months @ $302.95. When it falls due again on Xmas eve i'll pay 12 months and get 20% off.
The Qld Grubberment is essentially buying votes for the upcoming election. The discount comes in affect from September.

You're really getting ripped a new one at just shy of $700 !!!

Cost breakdown at 12 months :

Registration fee              $136.20
Traffic improvement fee   $68.30
CTP insurance premium   $382.40

Cost breakdown at 6 months :

Registration fee               $68.10
Traffic improvement fee   $34.15
Surcharge                        $9.50
CTP insurance premium   $191.20

It appears CTP will increase from 1 July 2024 going from $382.40 to $387.80 for a 2 seater murdercycle.
