ST 1300 Bad fuel
« on: July 26, 2024, 02:37:38 PM »
 :rd13

G'day all,

I am looking at a secondhand ST1300 that has been sitting for 1 owner has said that the bike has been sitting for 10 years.

By the sound of it, the owner is saying that the bike will not start due to bad fuel.

Has anyone had this issue or know if bad fuel is an issue?

I don't have any more information about the bike.

Thanks

Bad(old) fuel could have choked the filter/pump and left residue elsewhere. Any remaining fuel will need to be drained, and the system cleaned out as best as possible. Oil, brake/clutch fluid and coolant should be replaced as well.. Battery and tyres are probably toast as well. The tyres may look OK, but the rubber will be hard and brittle.

If the price is right, it may be worth the gamble.

Where you located Howie?  I have two second hand ST1300's, one is surplus to my needs (not sure which one as yet), let me know if you're interested.

I'm in Grafton. This ST only has 9,000 km on it. So it would be a great buy. My 2000 model only has 60,000 on it. The 1300 would make for a great upgrade.

I would have the bike services and new rubber put on it and then rego. It's not registered anymore. But with a little work, It would be back on the road just in time for Spring.

It would need to be cheap.  If you're paying mechanics to get it up to roadworthy standard that alone could set you back around three grand, depending, of course, on what they found.  If a simple fuel drain and flush fixed the engine and new fluids supplied all around, that would come in under a thou.  Look out for corrosion in the tank.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

So here is an update on the ST1300

I got a notification that old mate had updated the ad.

The kilometers on the bike now reads as 155,000. Big jump from 10,000.

I sent old mate a message about the deal with the kilometers going and surprise surprise, no answer.....

My gut was saying to good to true and it was...

Got a couple in Melbourne, with only (around) 58,000 / 75,000km …. just saying.

I have one in the SA Riverland with 138,500 on it.

Both mine and Wiliamsons are in the 'bikes for sale' section.
