2024-08-18 Caltowie Ride To Eat
« on: August 20, 2024, 10:59:10 AM »
No new territory for me on this one as the entire day was on roads I have ridden before.  I set off to Two Wells and the followed the course that the Indian Pacific takes from Adelaide to Sydney (well as far as Jamestown anyway).

I crossed the said line on a few occasions, the first being here at Korunye.  I should add I didn't do the dirt through Calomba, Long Plains, Avon, Kallora and Beaufort, instead opting to stay on the asphalt from Mallala to Nantawarra.

The Grace Plains Methodist Church is now a private residence and I am guessing they got sick of people like me stopping and taking photos, because they've removed the Grace Plains Methodist Church sign from the building.

It was there when I rode through on the way to the Wallaroo Ride To Eat in april.

Another church at Mount Templeton.

Heading across to Perth last month and back this month it appeared that the silo that was at Nantawarra had been taken away.  Part of me riding this way was to take a closer look.  It had been pulled downs and it's like it was never there.  The silos at Mallala and Long Plains went a couple of years ago.  I'm guessing Redhill will be next.

Speaking of Redhill I rode in to look at the Eureka hotel.  A couple of years ago it had an under renovations sign on it so I had earmarked it for a future RTE venue.  Alas, future visits it still said "under renovations" and on sunday it was no different.  I think it's been abandoned.

Then on through Crystal Brook, Gladstone and Huddleston I made my way to Caltowie.  Crystal Brook was an RTE venue for earlier in the year but was changed due to extreme heat being forecast.  Caltowie was the original venue for this RTE as well, but apparently they don't don't do lunched on sundays.  Actually, it didn't look like they open at all.  Last time I was here there were bikes parked out the front and the punters drinking so it's a shame if it has closed.

They had interesting no parking signs out the front though.  A mazda was parked out the front of the "Toyotas only" sign.

The last minute change of venue saw us going to near by Jamestown.  I always look at this Perrys truck when I refuel in Jamestown.

I then made my way to the pub and strategically parked so no car could squeeze in yet leave enough room for both Shillas and Langersa to park their bikes.

Arriving heaps early it was time for a walk around town and to look at the old buildings.  I've checked out the railway station and museum on previous trips so a casual walk was limited to the main street.  Clive Palmer has a photography outlet there too.

I snapped both Shillas and Langers as they arrived and they duly parked in the spot I left for them.

For lunch I had a Sri Lankan curry.  It's not the first time either.  I had one at the Middleton RTE weeks after coming back from Tassie in 2019.  This curry was good, but the Middleton one was better.

The original plan was a straight ride through Spalding to Clare and home.  Both Shillas and Langers lamneted on the entire road to Spalding being non existent road work but road work speed limits so I ditched that idea, took the Wilkins Highway to Hallett and returned via Burra.  That's the green line on the map.  Oh yeah, I have worked out how to edit gps tracking data and change the line's color.  GPS logger stats tell me I did a paltry 500km for the day.  It would have got the Versys over the 200'000km mark had I ridden that though.

Edit: I did less than 500 and it wouldn't have pushed the kwaka over the 200'000 mark.
