New knees
« on: November 18, 2025, 06:31:33 PM »
I go and see my orthopaedic surgeon on the 28th January
I have been bone on bone for about 10 years
When I had my off in 2018 while in recovery I was talking to the Orthopaedic Surgeon who overseed the recovery about my knee's. Well he said I will know when I need to get them done
I hurt my right knee on a recent ride south
I had a cortisone needle in my left knee 2 weeks ago
But that is only good for 3 to 6 months
So I made the decision to get them both done at once
The quality of life will be better than the pain I will have to put up with in recovery
Hopefully only off the bike for about 3 months
And I have the Spyder to ease my way back

Ouch..

Good luck with the Op and recovery.. The Docs work magic these days, but I hear the Physio nurses can be pretty tough.

Be sure thats what you want Leo. I know a lot of people who have had knees done. Generally a good result. The only one that was difficult had them done together. All the best with it.

Personal experience. Had my left knee replaced Dec '23. It was kaput, no other options. It was a significant challenge for me on the rehabilitation side of things. I was off the bike for a few months, had issues getting enough bend to operate the gear lever, and even considered buying a DCT bike. Managed to adjust the gear lever to a position that works, not perfect, but usable. You have the advantage of having the bike covered, DCT, wise that is. Anyway, just food for thought. Take care. ++

I agree with Popeye. My sister had both knees done, at the same time, against advice. It resulted in significant pain and discomfort and a very protracted recovery and rehabilitation. And to be honest shes still not without pain 4 years later. On the otherhand i have a mate who had a knee replacement (single) and he was back playing competitive tennis within 4 - 6 months.  Everyone is different of course and i wish you all the very best.

My good knee is the one playing up at the moment so that is what brought me to the decision to getting them both done
I have talked to about 12 people who have had a double knee replacement and they are all happy that they had them done together and all seem happy they did it that way
I have also talked to a few that have had them done separately
Only 1 person a x work colleague and ride mate who had 1 done is not happy with the outcome
I have not talked to the orthopaedic Surgeon about getting them both done together
But I am really for the hard yards (I think) :think1
My wife bought me one of those peddle machine that you put in front of the lounge
My Doctor suggested it. Getting the muscles ready for the hard yards

One of my main concerns was down on your knees like I do out in the Rose Garden weeding like I do
A retired Policeman friend who got both done got down on both knees not hands and shuffled across the floor
This inspired me to get them both done

Now that's impressive. I believe there are a couple of ways the replacement is done. Incisions down the front of the knee cap and incisions done from the side of the knee. The person who had the cut down the side had no problem getting down on her knees (important - she's a good Catholic lady 😁). Other with the front cut have mentioned discomfort

From what I've been told, it's really really important to put in the hard yards when it comes to physio.
You only get out what you put in... :thumbs

Good luck.

Listen to the torturer (physio), and do your rehab if you do nothing else.
