Gday folks. 2005 Pan
« on: April 15, 2026, 07:48:38 PM »
 :dred11

Gday everyone.
I have a 2005 burgundy pan.
Got it about 3 years ago.
Its got 130000kms on it so barely run in.
Great bike and surprisingly agile for its weight
Had the dreaded F25 but replaced the knock sensor and plug and it went away so there is hope if anyone gets the fault.
It didnt seem to affect the bike at all but annoyed me when the light came on.
I was glad the ECU appears to be OK as I hear they are rarer than unicorn poo.

Unfortunately another issue has raised its head.
I went to start it up about two weeks ago and it turned over but wouldnt fire.
I'm getting spark but the fuel pump wont prime.
The pump works OK (replaced it recently and tested it), the circuit is good - the 12v goes back to the ECU. The relay tests and functions correctly when 12v applied but doesnt when put back in circuit. Have discovered that the ECU completes the circuit by switching the circuit to ground. It doesnt appear to be doing this as all grounds appear good - tested wiring from ECU direct to battery negative and circuits good.
Does anyone know of anything else to check eg the HISS system, as I have heard that faults with that will allow the bike to crank but not start.
I have found some wiring diagrams but Im assuming they are for American versions as they dont have HISS and the wiring to the ECU on my bike has four extra wires which are not on the diagrams.
Does anyone have any idea which wires to the ECU are related to the HISS?
Can a scan tool be used on this bike through the four pin comms plug under the seat?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I spoke to my nearest Honda dealer and they werent interested in a bike that age.
Cheers,
Bill

I had a mate who's ST1300 would not start
As it turned out he grabbed the wrong key it was one without the chip in it
When he got the right key it fired up

G'day Bill, I've checked out my Haynes service manual and taken some photos of the wiring diagrams for the European version of the ST1300.
I'll post them up shortly... :thumbs

Hi from a wet, wild & windy west coast of Tasmania (currently sitting in motel room).

Sometimes the most complex things have the simplest solution, in this case check that your battery terminals are tightened firmly.

Hi Bill, How many keys do you have? Are you trying to use one that doesn't have a chip linked to the ECU?

Thanks for the info.
I took the key to a locksmith and it has a working chip in it so going to look at the receiver in the ignition.

We moved from "sunny" Scotland to Adelaide 16 years ago but I kept the email address as I've had it for years and it's the only one I remember easily - getting old and memory's going.

Thanks for your reply.
Bike only came with one ignition key and the red one for the luggage. Thought it came with 2 but can only find one - it's been a few years since I got the bike so I could be wrong.
Took the key to a locksmith yesterday and they checked it. Apparently it has a readable chip but suggested checking the ignition for damage to the receiving unit.
They did suggest a place in Victoria which apparently has had some success with these issues but it would involve sending the ECU, key and receiver on the ignition switch. I'm hoping it doesn't have to come to that.

Battery and terminals checked and all good. Dashboard and lights all come on, bike cranks but fuel pump doesn't prime and bike wont fire up.
Going to go through all the loom connections with electrical cleaner and see if anything jumps out at me.

Thanks, very helpfull.
These show the immobiliser socket and the coloured wires which are not on the other wiring diagrams I found.
Explains a lot.
Thanks again.
I just need to find a circuit diagram to explain what the wires do in the immobilser to see if I can test to see if the fault is actually there or I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Hope this helps

I chased this around for two weeks with wire ring diagrams testing tracing wires all the usual words and wheel kicks
I had the bike on the centre stand the whole time and then the grandson was playing around with the bike helping grandad and put the side stand down  I turned the ignition on to do another fruitless test and the FI light started flashing codes that lead me to the injection plug
When I pushed on it I recon it moved .5 of a thickness of a hair and bam everything sprung into life

G'day Bill.

Hope to see you at a RTE (Ride to Eat) sometime soon - either on the bike or in your 4 wheeled transport.

SA is hosting the next National Rally in 2027, all the details up soon once I sort the other life issues out & pull my finger out.

Cheers

G'day billm1, welcome to the forum :hatwave

Have you looked at the wiring going to the kill switch?
From memory the kill switch primes the fuel pump. There may be a broken wire or connection issue :think1

Thanks for all the help folks but its looking like a faulty ECU not priming the fuel pump.
Checked the wiring out and the 12v circuit traces back through the stop switch, bank relay and fuel relay and goes into the ECU as expected if everything good.
I suspect the ECU isn't switching the earth leg for the fuel relay coil. All earth connections from the ECU are good and under 0.5 ohm on both black and grey plugs.
If I connect an external earth to the fuel pump relay bypassing the ECU, the pump runs and the bike starts and runs fine.
I suspected a faulty HISS chip in the key or the pick-up ring on the ignition but I'm guessing these are fine. If I unplug the ring, the bike will turn over but not fire up even with the relay bypass wire in. The key chip has been confirmed sending by a locksmith. When I plug the ring back in and try again the bike fires up and runs with the earth bypass wire in.
The only fault codes I get when checking on the F1 fault history/list are 9 (Intake Air Temp sensor) and 26 (Righthand Knock Sensor), neither of which will stop the bike from starting or running according to info I've found on line.
I don't want to scrap the bike but I know these ECUs are now unobtainium.
Does anyone know anywhere that can repair or at least check these ECUs? I don't want to go down the road of getting a US ECU and wiring loom which I've read can solve this problem.
I found a company called ECUmeistro in Victoria which claims to repair motorcycle ECUs. Has anyone had any dealings with them?

Would there be any issues with permanently connecting the fuel pump relay earth/ECU bypass wire?
It would mean that the pump would run all the time the ignition is on but the 12v supply to the circuit would still be subject to all the normal interlocks (ignition switch, HISS, engine stop switch and tilt switch).
I don't see a fuel pressure regulator or switch in the circuit diagram so I'm guessing that the pump isn't turned on and off by the ECU based on fuel pressure and the fuel just returns to the tank if it's not used, similar to a diesel engine. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
The engine stops as normal when the ignition is switched off and the fuel pump relay drops out and the pump stops.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, the bike is too good to scrap so hopefully it wont come to that.

My 1100 had similar issues and required a bypass wire to get the fuel pump running, which in turn enabled the bike to start. No issues running with it like this.

Thanks for confirming what I hoped would be the case.
Greatly appreciated.
I'll wire in a constant earth, bypassing the ECU and take the bike for a run.
I'll keep it local just in case this is the start of ECU issues and it fails miles from home :thumbsup

I'll let you all know what ECUmeistro come back with regards if they can repair these ECUs and fix the F25, F26 issues.
