New South Wales motorcycle riders face tough new mandatory protective gear rules

A cohort of Aussie road users are set to face the biggest change in 20 years in the coming months.
From July 1, learner and provisional motorcycle riders will be required to wear high-visibility vests and protective gloves in New South Wales under changes to the Motorcycle Graduated Licensing Scheme.
It is the biggest overhaul of the state’s motorcycle licensing system in two decades.

Riders have three weeks to get the right gear before the new changes come into effect.
The NSW Government says the reform aims to reduce serious injuries and deaths among novice riders, who are significantly more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than experienced motorcyclists.

“It is really distressing when we see fatalities where people weren’t wearing helmets and when we see serious crashes and trauma where people have not been wearing gloves,” New South Wales Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison told 7News.
“They have a crash, damage their hands, and that can mean their career is gone.”

The reforms were developed following recommendations from the NSW Motorcycle Safety Round Table 2025, which included more than 70 riders, trainers and road safety experts.
The changes come as motorcycle riding continues to grow in popularity across the state, particularly among younger people.

????

I have been using a high vis vest for around 20 years, and decent gloves... I dont really think the high vis helps much, but gloves are just common sense.  There should be no need to legislate the wearing of either.

The NSW Safetycrats must've felt the need to justify their pay packets...lol.

I agree with you Brock about the High Vis...if they are so great at increasing visibility, you have to ask the question, why would you limit them to L & P platers?
Thankfully, touch wood, they haven't thought of extending it...yet... :thumb

As for gloves etc, I always wear them but plenty of riders seem to think they don't need them, the same with boots and jackets/trousers...

#I remember many years back some Victorian Safetycrats were all for making it compulsory for motorcyclists to wear full protective gear all the time...
As any motorcyclist would know, it's just not practical but these idiots thought it was a great idea until they were invited to be pillioned to a special event of some sort.
They got kitted out in full leathers etc (at what must have been at great expense). It ended up being a stinking hot day so by the time they arrived at the event they
were well and truly over the idea...  :rofl

Best way to change anyone's mind is to let them experience the folly of their idea...

I am one of those old-school riders who will always wear good jeans and full-length (knee high) boots when riding. I will also always wear some sort of protective jacket, whether that is the good old leather Brando jacket, the new-to-me OzStoc jacket I got from Stinky Pete, or my Shark Leathers protective Kevlar shirt in summer. I also wear gloves every time I go out, either nice insulated gauntlets in winter or short and breathable ones in summer. They are also always leather of some sort, although not cow leather usually.

I cringe evertime I see someone, and I see way too many, riding in shorts, a t-shirt, and their bloody thongs.
THERE ARE OLD RIDERS, AND THERE ARE BOLD RIDERS, BUT THERE ARE DAMN FEW OLD AND BOLD RIDERS.

Keep the dirty side down.

Biggest change in 20 years. Common sense really. Sensational headline but not really that big. Haven’t worn a hi viz much but if they can’t ee a big red motorcycle with headlight I don’t see the hi viz making a difference. Mind you some motorists pull out in front of trucks and semis so maybe it’s eye tests and glasses required.

A friend of mine in the NSW Fire Brigade once said about 20 years ago that hi-vis was pointless on a bike as drivers don't even notice him in a big, red fire truck with lights and sirens.

Plus, looking at many bikes from the front, screens hide the riders body so a hi-vis won't be seen anyway!

That's always been my argument against them being compulsory, Dale!

Also one of the reasons I was against "lights on" back in the day... :thumb

Proof you don't need to wear Hi Vis to get noticed on a motorcycle...  :grin

As most know, I ride/rode a white ex cop ST1100. When coupled with a white helmet and hi vis jacket I was regularly rendered invisible, especially on the freeway. The only people who saw me were 1%er, who abused me for looking like a cop. And the cops, who waved (in a friendly way)
