Well, the new Dash-shelf on my 1300 is on and (almost) complete. All I'm waiting on now is the TomTom GPS, which is in transit, so I'm told.

The first draft of the shelf was designed and built by Tipsy (thanks Tipsy, I hope you enjoy the Guinness!) and we fitted it to my machine for the ride home. I quickly discovered that it was way too wide front to back and that I couldn't see the Speedo above 80KPH, or the indicators or the fuel gauge. So once home I started fiddling and over a few iterations finally settled on the right size.

I fitted a 4-way cigarette lighter power block in the right-hand glove box for power and at the same time ran a separately fused power feed up to the front for the GME UHF CB Radio. Radio cables and antenna supplied by Dale (many thanks, Dale). I fitted the sexy little antenna to the back, but I'm not entirely happy with the mounting so I'll probably look at that again sometime in the not too distant future.

The most difficult part was figuring out how to get the cables up onto the top of the instrument cluster without cutting or drilling the plastic, and I finally decided on using the left-hand air-duct as a conduit. I removed the plastic cover from the left-hand mirror and, using the trusty straightened coat-hanger, I pulled the cables from under the false tank through the access hole under the cover. I then re-oriented the coat-hanger and shoved it down the air-duct and pulled the cables up whilst feeding the same cables back under the plastic near the mirror. Then I refitted the mirror cover.

Lo and behold, all cables in place, all neat and tidy and invisible, and no holes in the plastic! Success! I then used some spiro-wrap to hold them all together and neaten things up whilst giving some abrasion protection.

I painted the shelf and brackets and twiddled my thumbs until I thought they were dry enough to work with ...WRONG, so I went and painted them again! Once dry I fitted the supports (which incidentally attach to the instrument cluster using the 4 outer holes with overly long replacement screws) to the shelf, and the mount for the UHF and two Ram balls. Then fitted the whole thing to the bike.

Screen refitted and Biologic phone case fitted. Centre RAM ball will be for the TomTom GPS, which has a power lead right below it.

All put back together ready to go ride tomorrow!

Viewed from the front showing the wiring at the back of the UHF Radio, but difficult to see because of the reflection of the clouds etc.

I have a copy of the modified hardware template which I will be giving to Tipsy at Dugandan, so if anyone wants a shelf for their 1300...see him!

Now all I need to do is practice a little patience whilst waiting for the GPS to get here, once that arrives I'll pair it to the Starcomm and the phone and I'll be in business!!

That is lookin so cool Whiz whow.... as I said it takes a little work and time to make the minor alterations that is needed to get the final result,,,.( after 30yrs still workin on missus)

Blood may have been spilt on this one but after 8 Guinness all is healed

The aerial mount looks good Whizz.

Where did you get the ram mounts? What is the hole spacing for the screws and what is the part number?

I got the RAM balls from Johnny Appleseed (although I saw that OzSToc now has a deal with RAM). The centre to centre distance is 1.912" ( what an intuitive figure!)

Update:
The GPS arrived this morning, so I did the mod to the carrier which took all of about 15 minutes and stuck it on the bike. Paired it to the Starcomm and then to the phone, very easy absolutely no problem at all, then it was off down the road to see if it all worked.

Very quickly found that there was a minor problem with the shelf which was that because it was supported only along the front edge it tended to flap forwards and backwards with every bump in the road. Had to ride round the block holding it so that it didn't cause any damage, very disconcerting!. Made an aluminium strap and had to screw it to the front plastic under the windscreen, but that works a treat. Painted up it is almost invisible and really solidifies the whole installation.

Went out for a blast down the freee-way to make sure everything is good...and it is. I can hear both the phone and the GPS via bluetooth and the UHF straight from the Starcom...bloody marvellous!!!

I am feeling quite pleased with myself right at this moment because it is actually quite some time since I did anything practical on a bike and this turned out to be somewhat more complex that I first envisaged. Happy to answer any questions either personally (during an RTE) or through the forum!

Hey Whizz - which position of raising the windscreen does it come closest to the apparatus on the shelf?

And; what material is the shelf and supports made out of?

At the lowest setting of the screen it almost touches the back left corner of the UHF, as the screen moves upwards its top moves slightly forward making the screen more upright, so the lowest point is the closest.

The shelf is made from 5mm thick Aluminium and the supports are made from steel (about 1mm or less thickness). In fact the supports are too thin and do not provide sufficient rigidity on their own, I had to include a strap at the front to stop the shelf waving in the breeze.

The GPS and the biologic phone case are waterproof, the UHF is 'showerproof' (at least I'm told it is) although the location of the UHF is under the windscreen and quite well sheltered. I suppose I'll find out just how waterproof it is the first time it starts persisting down!

The GPS took almost three weeks to arrive, and as I'm running out of seconds far too quickly (see 84,000 per day??) that is far too long!!! Seemed like forever!, but now that it's here it seems good, couple of teething problems with it staying paired to the Starcom, but I think we'll survive.

Hey Whizz if you make the Templates out some A3 paper it then can be folded and posted a lot easier.
Dimensions are then only needed for the stays

And send them out to who ever wants one and of course I can make them for cost plus freight for those who are unable to do it them selves or do not have mates or friends woh might be able to help them

I only have a small UHF hand held but check out the size of that CB on the dash???? Suppose size does matter
