SWAGS... Who's got the best one?
« on: August 23, 2012, 08:30:50 PM »
OK - plenty of different styles out there - why is YOURS great?

What features? What size? How much?

Give us a brand name too to further search the good ones.

Cheers, Diesel

Had a thought once or twice about maybe grabbing a sway for that occasional sleep beside the  road "BUT"
"BUT" the bloody things are big and me thinks they still need a blanket or a bag on the inside to keep you warm?????
So I'm really interested in what people are going to say

Just bought a new Burke and Wills last week.
Goulburn Disposals
Single Biker Swag $ 275.00

Features:

• 20mm Ultra heavy density covered mattress
• Extra height and foot space
• Compact design allows easy attachment to bike
• Adjustable shoulder strap
• Eyelet on top flap to allow tie up
• Flysceen Mesh at the head end
Construction:

• Light weight 12oz. canvas with black PVC base

This is the second Burke and Wills biker swag i have owned
Throw in my -5 C sleeping bag and this rolls up and sits on the bike nicely.

Mmmm.....had to throw a bucket of cold water over our swags they have been breeding in the shed, have 7 of them in the shed and only 4 ppl in the family.

Don't use a swag on the bike, ours are in swag bags on the roof of the 4x4.

The first four are Burke & Wills all with 70mm mattress;

Mine is a XL Redgum 1150 wide, lots of mesh all round and use a Darche -12 XL sleeping bag

Wife's (if not snuggled into my XL with me) Ironbark (purple) with a -10 outer limits bag

Daughter, Ironbark (pink) with -10 outer limits bag

Son, Coolabah with half mesh and -10 black wolf bag

And cotton sheets in all for summer camping

Our old swags used for loaners or when extras needed are made here locally and are similar to the Saul Swag.......2 singles and a double all in 14oz ripstop canvas with 50mm mattress.

My swag purchase advise would be if your after quality to last for many years, go with Australian made canvas swag in either dome or able to suspend the canvas of you so to shed water of the canvas.....consider where your going to use the swag, the further North you go the more mesh you need.

If your after a budget but quality lighter swag the Mitchell by oztrail has a great reputation on 4x4 forums.

Cheers
Chris

I use a Oztrail swag with a self inflating (& deflating) mattress for me its too small however acceptable, biggest problem is the hoops and pegs required and when I have the aux fuel tank on the back seat it sits too high so I use a camping hammock which doubles as a bivvy.

Currently building a new aux fuel tank which will be lower and have a rack so the swag (probably a bigger one) will be used, there are a couple of options available http://www.mrswagman.com.au/camping-swags-for-bikers.shtml, http://www.wildearth.com.au/swags-biker-swags-c-122_191.html?sort=3d&page=1

I have a Wild Country swag which I will use on the way to Inverell. On the bike I will use a inflatable mattress to save on room. You enter through the top and you have 3 hoops.  - 10 sleeping bag keeps me warm :blk13
