Silverton Ride 15-16 Sept
« on: September 17, 2012, 08:44:59 AM »
Six riders headed to the historic town of Silverton, just out of Broken Hill, on the weekend of the 15th and 16th September.   Alan and Heather were heading there for a weekend away and kindly extended the invitation for anyone else to tag along.   Alans1100 and Heather, Stinky Pete and Smokeguy all camped at Penrose Park, while Loanrider1 and Malcolm grabbed a cabin.    Penrose Park is a great place to stay and the owners are putting a lot of effort into making it a beaut place to stay.   Lawns for tents, plenty of shelter, showers and toilets, rainwater for drinking, and a short walk from the Silverton Pub.

We rode out to Mundi Mundi Lookout to view the sunset, and it turned into a car park as lots of other visitors rolled up as well.    Many bought chairs and wine and were clearly going to make an evening of it.   However, we headed back to camp and took the short walk over the creek to the pub.   The choice was fish and chips or sausages, with a couple of quiet ales.   I get the imprression the OZStoc group there last weekend spent a great deal more time sampling the wares than we did.  Back to camp where we shared some red, port and stories, and were all tucked in by 10.00pm.

The next morning we took an early photo opportunity outside the pub before the hoards of visitors arrived and then headed up to the cafe at the top of the hill for scones and a coffee for breakfast before saying our farewells.  On the ride back to Broken Hill and beyond, we must have passed 100 or more bikes heading out to Silverton, and I suspect the pub was going to be busy.

I arrived back home in Adelaide at 4.00pm after a great weekend.  I'm constantly amazed that motorcyclists will ride hundreds and even thousands of kilometers to have a feed and a chat with some new mates, and then turn around and go home again.

Participants were Alans1100 & Heather (Alan & Heather),  Lonerider1 & his mate (Ric and Malcolm),  Smokeguy (Bob) and StinkyPete (Pete)

For a place that had a great deal of nothing to look at I found it to be one of the more relaxing places I have had the good fortune to visit.  I had a great weekend with the guys and gals and look forward to a few more in the future.  :thumbs  At least I found out there are other people that snore just as loud as I must. (so I've been told  :wink1 ) I'm still gobsmacked at how Stinkypete brought all the essentials from home and I swear I saw a kitchen sink in one of his panniers  :eek . I'm definitely reassessing my loading on the beast. The truly amazing thing was how he packed away this campsite and it all disappeared into his bike.

It was a great weekend - a great ride - I was tail-end charlie on the way back and watched as Malcolm nearly pick up this huge ol man emu as a pillion.  He was so busy watching a group of females on the left, he didn't see the boss coming over from the right at full pelt. The emu saw the bike and was back-footing so hard his feet were flying over Malcolm's head and I swore he was trying to get on the back of the bike.  It was close, maybe too close and could have turned nasty, and even tho we had a good laugh at the next stop, I think we all agreed it pays to really watch the road when the critters are close.

Thumbs up to all that took the time to go to Silverton. As Pete said it's a great place and I'll definitely be down for another run out there.
And a big thank you to Allen and Heather for inviting us to share the weekend with them.

I've had a bit of practice, decided there's no point in being uncomfortable, and refined my gear a bit.   :thumbsup

Thanks to StinkyPete (Pete), Lonerider1 & his mate (Rick and Malcolm),  and Smokeguy (Bob) for turning up. We missed meeting Leethal this time but understand his healing foot op prevented a longish ride to see us.

To Rick, Malcolm and Bob, did you see the CX500 turbo I pointed at? It was parked just past the hotel when we were leaving. Not sure if Pete saw it as he was in front of me.

Forgot to mention in my report that Pete followed us as far as Olary where we had a rest stop. After we headed off again we had company for a few kays as we kept pace with a freight train for about half an hour or so.

The side car company that we mentioned in the cafe was a US one with an agent in Perth.

Glad too hear you guys (and gal) had a fun ride. I dont know what you heard about the OzStocers from the week before but its all lies I tells ya'.............lies!
Though a panadol was administered before the ride home. By the way Diesel and Growley thanks for 'sneeking' out and thanks Growley for turning on the A/C. Us 'softies' benefited from the extra couple of hours 'study' that you guys missed out on. So envious of missing out on the bitterly cold conditions you experienced that morning.
Sounds like Malcolm was lucky not to pick up a pillion. I wouldnt have found that emusing.
I would be up to do the ride again next year and maybe take in the Menindee Lakes.
Cheers all
Phil

Malcolm nearly pick up this huge ol man emu as a pillion

If I have to wear the moniker of "Skip' because of my 'encounter of a close kind' with a wallaby, then i propose Malcolm be hereby dubbed 'Emu'.
Any seconders????
Getting wind in my hair while I still have some.
