Being cheap and not wanting to spend a lot of money, I came up with the following GPS solution for my ST1100.

Only things purcahsed was the Relay and wire.  Everything else was recycled, pre-loved items, and left-over bits from previous projects.



The GPS is a Uniden MAP TRAX which has served me well the last 4 years.  Maps are a bit out of date, but it has never let me down.  It has become redundant with a New GPS on the cards for the Patrol. Using this GPS means I'm not really worried about theft or water as it owes me nothing.



The suction mount for the GPS no longer works, and the clip end no longer reliable so I decided to mount it using bolts.



I opened up the unit, and found some space to drill holes :grin







Removed Battery and drilled:





Perfect fit in a tight space (room above is where battery goes back in):

The test....yes it still works:





Next was the wiring, I decided to put the relay in the front end above the headlight.  Next time I'll probably do a fuse block under the seat in the tool compartment.  But for this install it works fine.

So off with the Screen etc:




On the back of the dash I found an ingnition powered wire, hooked up the relay, modified the original GPS power lead and put it all back together.




Not using Ball Ram mounts, I found the perfect length piece of stainless steel to do the job, and fixed this to the dash with small nut and bolt.  If someone wants to pinch this, they'd need to take half the dash with them (or have a size 8 spanner on them :grin






Went for a quick test ride, and realised the bend I made in the steel needed reinforcing to stop the wobbles:



All good now, and for $20 + 3 hours of my time, happy days.

Excellent work, I take it that the Maptrax is a 12V unit...

Yep, 12 volt it is.  Cut off the cigarette adapter, crimped some connectors and attached to the relay.
