I'm on a lighting/safety mission atm for my ST1100.


• DONE - I've ordered the H4 adapter rings I saw mentioned in the forums.

• Does anyone riding a PY either have the brackets for the lights or know what thread the nuts take? Might get a couple of brackets made at the local stainless engineering company up the road.
• DONE - I will order the 3M reflective kit I saw posted in these forums as well

Part numbers for what you need are here I think they are the same world wide but just in case select Australia and the right part numbers will come up. Items 15, 16, 23 and 24 are the light mountings and bolts

That should give you something to think about, not only that the items are what I'm looking at doing as well.

There is no real need to change the battery just because you are putting on extra lighting, the whole system is carried by the alternator.

The alternator puts out decent power even at idle.  On mine with twin 70W HID hi/los on and the 2 x 55W HID spots on at normal idle voltage sits on at least 14V.

If your battery goes flat when you are riding with the lights on, then there most likely is a fault in your alternator system. This is easy to check, but a bit harder to fix if there is a problem.

Hi Mech - don't forget to order (with the fog lamps).. relay, switch, fuse, wire and crimp connectors/solder - unless the PY is set up for this.

Installed a couple of items over the weekend, here's the first:

I've installed the black reflective panier set.

Step 1.
Cleaned the area with isopropyl alcohol wipes


Step 2.
Check for fit and alignment before removing the backing and applying


Step 3.
Apply the adhesive reflectives and take happy snap


Step 4.
Take a night shot for contrast to truly appreciate the black beauties, mine were taken on a full moon so not as much flash or contrast as I would like.


Very happy with the final result.

Second job for the weekend was to install the TPMS.

Step 1.
Firstly remove your tyre filler cap and replace with one of the new wireless temperature and pressure transmitters.
You'll notice they are labelled "1" and "2", I placed 1 on the front and 2 on the rear, as that's how they will appear on your screen (in my mind).


Step 2.
Firstly I had to remove the clutch handle as I needed to get in to fit the the TPMS:
Here you can see me tightening up the clutch handle after I've slipped in the TPMS.


Step 3.
The final product, I've set the upper and lower alarm limits for temperature and pressure.
As you can see my current tyre pressure is sitting a little low...so first chance I get I'll be bumping her up to 42 front and rear for a while and see how she likes it.

That's the spirit. - It may end up reading 46/48  or 38/40 - but you sound like you're right on the money to find the 'sweet spot'

Out of interest to some I recorded the starting temps and pressures before my 74km trip work and again at the end:

Both pressure and temperatures went up by 4 over the trip, nothing alarming. Tyres started at 15oC this morning.

Does that TPMS compensate for temperature rises?  I though that some did, and so approximate starting tyre pressures?  I had forgotten about TPMS systems so now have to say my farkle list is not complete...

Update - I think I have answered my own questions http://www.tyredog.com.au/store/2-wheel-wtpms/td-4100ax-motorcycle.html this system tells you pressure and temperature. Other ones I considered had an auto pressure compensate feature that allows for pressures rising when tyres get hot, and tells you the compensated figure.

Starting tyre pressure was 39.0 front and 40.5 rear.
Will fix the tyre pressure as soon as I knock off work.

Here is a quick n dirty spreadsheet, that will give you an idea of the relationship between temp and pressure.

The upshot is check your pressure before starting out (cold). If you reduce the pressure when hot, you will wind up with a badly under pressure when it cools off again.
