Whats your "other" bike?
« on: December 20, 2012, 12:43:25 PM »
I suspect that I'm not the only ST owner with a 2nd bike, owned for a different reason than the ST. What's yours, and what is your reason/excuse?

I'll start.

I mentioned my MT when I first joined, so I might be repeating myself a bit, but I have a '08 Yamaha MT-01, black with 10000ks on it. I owned it before the ST, and it was the reason that I got the ST. My reasoning was that after 100k on the back of the MT, my wife was a bit uncomfortable, as there's not much to sit on. Nowhere near as uncomfortable as my 1100 Katana when we got married, as she almost had a few off's off the back under hard accelleration, hence the ST with it's lounge type comfort. If she comes off the back of it, I'll probably need a new topbox.  :grin Although the MT can tour, it's more a fun bike for just me, whereas the ST tours, holds luggage securely, and will allow me to take my son on longer runs as well.

Both bikes live in the same shed, they don't fight, but I'm sure that the "wife" bike gets jealous of the "mistress" MT when I take her out. Actually, that's a pretty accurate simile of them both! (the bikes that is....) :spank

I could also mention the other bikes that are under the house (50's something AJS 350MS with 500cc topend, and a Cinnamon 1974 Yamaha TX650A), but they don't count as they are both in boxes.

I'll post a current photo of my two working bikes shortly,

I currently only have the ST in my name, but my dad has been making noises about giving me his 75 GL1000 with sidecar as he can no longer ride.  Be nice to have for special occasions....

I presently own a Montessa Cota trials bike but I haven't used that one since I bought my Yamaha DT230 2 stroke dirt bike.
I have recently bought a Suzuki DRZ400E enduro bike to replace the DT and am yet to take it from the shed.
I plan to sell both the Montessa and the DT.

While it is not on the road at the moment, my other bike is a 1978 GS1000 Suzuki, with all the usual modifications, including an engine rebuild by 80,000kms (1080 big bore kit, flowed head, street cams and a bit of suspension work.  I have also replaced and rewould the alternator a number of times over the years as well (150,000kms on the clock, all but 20,000 mine since 1980)

I also have a 2010 Suzuki DL650A Vstrom. A great bike, but it must be feeling left out because it doesn't get ridden much these days. As soon as I got the ST11, I had trouble being enthusiastic about the Suzie. It is for sale at the moment, but not a lot of takers out there. Anyone?

I was asked when I joined the forum what other bikes I had, and now the subject has come up again I suppose I had better tell all.
I am a member of the Vintage japanese Motorcycle Club and have a few older jap bikes that I have or are in the process of restoring, so from the biggest down they are;
1994 ST 1100 Honda *
1982 FT 500 Honda (plus spares bike) *
1984 KR 250 Kawasaki (to be restored next year)
1994 XV 250 Yamaha Virargo (Wendy's bike) *
1981 KE 175 Kawasaki (started on it) *
1972 SL 125 Honda (restored museum piece) *
1972 SL 125 Honda (being built as cafe racer)
1972 SL 125 Honda (dirt bike) *
1975 AG 100 Yamaha (ag bike from our farm) *
1965 C50 Honda stepthrough (in process)
2010 250 Chinese quad (pig chaser) *
1975/1986 YZ250 Yamaha engine/Suzuki frame drag bike *
1981 250E Maico enduro (owned from new) *

* these are all rideable

The SL 125 museum piece has won two trophys so far in the local shows, and I am taking it to S.A. next year for the VJMC National show to see how I go there. I rescued it from my brothers shed in boxes and took two years to restore.

My ST1300 has the company of a new DL1000 which I'm loving more each time I ride it!  :grin

It looks like I've inherited a second bike after Heather's mishap a couple months back.

Heather wanted to learn to ride so we got a new Lifan V250B which is one of the few Chinese brands based on the Virago 250.

Wish I had the negotiating skills to convince the Minister for War & Finance that I NEED 2 bikes.   :think1  I'd be looking at your Vstrom Bluey.

The latest addition to stop the ST1300 from getting lonely is my 88 GL1500 Goldy. In the shed needing some TLC is a 1985 LTD 250 Kawasaki. I have owned it from new and it has about 3,500 kms on the clock.

I'm afraid I'm poor like ST2UP.

Here's my other ride:

It's actually my work bike, because I have to travel 200 metres up and down my workplace, and it's pretty inefficient walking it.

I guess I'm even poorer, since mine only has 26" wheels and 18 gears (of which I use 2).   :thumbs
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

No, they count in my book :thumb...and like your good self, I too believe you have to have a motorcycle with attitude:thumbs...now what plans to you have to put your personal touch to the MT?

A couple of mine are already within this forum...
