New member seeking purchase advice
« on: January 07, 2013, 03:31:58 PM »
I am considering the purchase of a 2003 ST1300 with 112,000 km on the clock. Is there any known mechanical issues i should factor in ?
I currently ride a 1997 K11  ( go ahead & get that abuse out of your system now.....i'll wait  :|||| ) with 97k on the clock.
Any advice welcomed.I like the ST1300 alot, so if not this one it will only be a matter of time until another comes along ....  :thumb

Welcome! Well we would make you consider the ST1100 as it is a far superior machine  :p  :rofl

All Jokes aside there is some excellent experience and minds in this crew, at 112,000 sounds like it has just been worn in for you....

Hi and welcome to the fold.

Unless that one is really cheap, the mileage is a bit high.  Not that it's a major concern, because if well looked-after, it will  do another 150,000 without much effort.  The reason I say this, is there are always ST13s coming on the market with a lot less mileage at reasonable prices.  What is your budget?  You might have to travel interstate, but there are members everywhere who will do an inspection and test ride for you.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Just do it :). I just picked up my 03 ST1300, 104k on the clock, now over 106k in 2 weeks.

Hi guys, i am surprised & delighted by the quick response...thanks for the warm welcome  :hatwave
Asking price is $7500 & may well be owned by a ozstoc member .
Budget is around 10ish at the moment . Found another on gumtree ( 05 ,red,48k ) for $9700 but not too keen on the colour.
I guess it's always a personal taste/compromise issue when it comes to buying 2nd hand ....

As Biggles says, depends on the distance vs price, as well as any extras included and maintenance records. No major problems with the ST13 as long as all maintenance is done.  At any age minor niggles like coolant leaks (mostly just tighten a hose clamp or 2), thermostat may need replacing or at least a good coolant flush and keep greasing those drive splines at every tyre change.

$7,500 is a pretty decent price, can you get us some more details on the bike? and where is it? one of us can pop down and check them it out for you :)

Other factors are is it abs, electrically adjustable screen etc etc.  All this little things can add up when price vs distance is being considered.

It really seems like it's from the stone age, which from a purely personal aesthetic point of view is one of the reasons why i am upgrading....
Having said that it is very easy to work on, but having to do this to change the instrument bulbs over to L.E.D.s speaks for itself  :well

Welcome CK or is it "Evil" for short  >:()
Enjoy your time here on the forum.  As to the bike, just shop around until you are comfortable in what you want, remember that bike shops don't look at the extras on the bike so have a good look at what the bike already has ie, what was mentioned above plus things like top box, wind deflectors, cruise control, exhaust system.

What he  ^ ^  said regarding extras.  A top box is worth nearly a grand, and a cruise control ditto.  And they add very little to resale price, only attractiveness to buyers.

There's nothing wrong with red- you might think it flashy, but you get used to it going faster etc.  There are at least two shades of red, Candy Glory and Wineberry.  The latter is more subdued.  Colour is closely linked to year model, as you would have already worked out.

I think you'll get a very good bike of around 2004 to 2008 vintage with not much more than 50 thou kays and in good nick for $ ten thou on the road with 6 months rego and good tyres.  Maybe not from a dealer, but most ST13s are in the hands of careful owners and usually garaged.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
