« on: April 01, 2013, 01:43:41 AM »
Trying to get back in the saddle, decided on a ST. Looked at heaps over the last year, always pipped at the post or they were very rough for good money. Didn't realise you guys were here
My better half is sick of the Airport run, so there was my opportunity to get a bike again.
Chose the ST for it's storage, weather protection and size against the other traffic. Plus I have always had big Hondas
Have first refusal on a cheapie blue 93 up in the hills on Wednesday, so I am not bona fide member just yet.

Born in Perth, moved up north at 10 years old. First bike in 82, was a gsx250 brand new, well before I got a car. Living up north though, should have got the dirt bike instead. Got a DT250 to get around on when the licence blew. Had a CB900 Bol d'or for a while as well as well as a XR500 down Tom Price way. Long break till midlife crisis at 40, became a junior member of the Ulysses and bought a DR650, then a Blackbird...mainly to get to work on. Gave them up when we moved to Perth 5 years ago.
Kids are old enough now to not 'need' us, so here We are ready to ride in the big smoke...

Hi D-Lec,

+1 on Streak's comments. There are plenty who are glad to offer an opinion to help you decide...  Welcome to the crew - you won't be disappointed. With any luck it'll be yours for out next RTE on the 14th.

Cheers, Rob.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. The ST I am looking at needs bit of work by the sound of it (thanks Alheng for the heads up) but he was straight up about it and dropped the price accordingly.
It is the times after the airport run that I am looking forward to, then we can look at upgrading to something newer perhaps.
Forgive the newbie question but what's the RTE everyone talks about? R for ride, what's the other two? A search came up with lots of references to rte but didn't see an explanation.

Cheers,
Deano

Thanks Mitch, but I couldn't leave an ST1300 at the airport-I would be worrying about it the whole time away. An ST1100 that's 20 years old however....
The missus still isn't convinced yet on being a pillion in the city, so it will help sort out if I just need a solo seat on the next bike or not... ;)

"Ride To Eat", Makes sense!
As I don't have the bike yet and it needs some work first, I will need to pass on this upcoming one. Maybe I can rock up in the Navara and do some 4wd on the way back. DTE or 4WDTE doesn't have the same ring to it though...

Welcome Deano. Be sure to do your home work on any bike that needs some work, some parts can be expensive. The ST1300 have a fancy security system so I think they would be as secure as any bike at the airport. Mitch's bike would be worth looking at, just take a BIG freind with you to twist his arm.

Thanks Glen, was more worried about it being tipped over on it's side or out in the weather if the cover goes missing, than stolen. Seen both in the long term park. Actually, I often put blown off covers back on the bikes as we go through the long term when I am carpooling - much to the amazement of my non-rider colleagues.

Thanks Shiney,
I picked the Dark Blue 1993 up from Parkerville last week. Got it for $2500 thanks to Alheng's arm twisting previously (but then he bought a BMW). The guy had got himself a DL1000 VStrom to tackle the gravel more.
Haven't got pics yet, pretty much parked it up straight away in the shed for now.
It looks like the second owner (apparently I am the 4th) set it up for big KM rides and it has all the gear like throttle lock, custom seat (I think he was shorter than me, though) and sheepie, Bagster tank bag and a fancy rear shock that we can't identify. Has a Z8 on the rear, needs a new front soon, BT21 on it now, Standard sizes. From the paper work that came with it, he had it for many years in NSW, QLD & then Perth and did most of the Kays. It clicked over to 108000 on the way home. In pretty good condition for 20 years old (same age as my eldest daughter).
As you may have seen from the other posts the rear shock is staying compressed most of the time, but it was still awesome to be riding again.
Actually I had never ridden in Perth before, in fact it was first traffic lights I have ever stopped at on a bike. All my previous riding was up in the Karratha area. Ironically, Karratha has since got traffic lights.
Have ordered a new standard shock from USA for $340 all up. Won't be riding it until it is in.
Bit worried about a rear wheel 'cogging' effect when I really launched it from the lights once, so will be checking the cush drive inserts and the drive splines when I put the shock in. Could smell a bit of coolant and the temp gauge was getting to 2/3rds at the lights, so may have well all sorts of fun with it yet, but at the price I paid, it will be all good in the long run (ST pun intended).
Cheers,
Deano

Welcome, D-Lec.
I have two ST1100s, 234,000 kms on one (2000) and more than 200,000 kms on the other (2002).
My STs also heat up in slow traffic/lights, then the big fan cuts in and you should be able to hear it over the engine noise at idle.
If the fan does not cut in you may need to replace the thermostat.

Thank you for the welcome, everyone.
It was the lack of the fan cutting in that I was worried about.
Haven't even looked under the plastic bits yet, only concern was the shock.
Do not have a lot of time to play with it yet, renovations and other stuff keeping me away from digging in too deep.
Cheers,

The temp gauge is about right. Fan should cut in about there and take it back to the mid point. While the indication is within the normal range you should be OK.

The thermostat isn't connected to the temp gauge. The gauge sensor is just forward of the thermostat and in the same housing. The temp sensor for the fan is on the LH side of the radiator on the motor side just above the drain plug.
