ST1100 coolant tank ABS model
« on: April 12, 2013, 04:49:08 PM »
Looks like I need to call on our collective expertise again.
I was checking the coolant level today, before I head off to the Ulysses AGM tomorrow and when I opened the "reservoir" I saw that there was no tube attached to the inside of the cap where the expanded coolant would flow.  This means coolant will flow straight into the reservoir when hot (expanded) but as the engine cools the coolant wont be drawn back into the radiator.
Hang on, the radiator has a pressure cap so the coolant will only flow one way past the cap.
Why then is there an expansion tank if the coolant can't return to radiator?  It's got a low and upper mark on the side.
Maybe something to do with not letting the coolant onto the roadway.
Anybody have an idea?

The system works exactly like it does on a car......providing the coolant level is maintained between the upper and lower levels it will work as it should.

Should you need to add coolant often it could mean a leak in the system somewhere.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/cooling-system7.htm

The radiator cap actually increases the boiling point of your coolant by about 45 F (25 C). How does this simple cap do this? The same way a pressure cooker increases the boiling temperature of water. The cap is actually a pressure release valve, and on cars it is usually set to 15 psi. The boiling point of water increases when the water is placed under pressure.

When the fluid in the cooling system heats up, it expands, causing the pressure to build up. The cap is the only place where this pressure can escape, so the setting of the spring on the cap determines the maximum pressure in the cooling system. When the pressure reaches 15 psi, the pressure pushes the valve open, allowing coolant to escape from the cooling system. This coolant flows through the overflow tube into the bottom of the overflow tank. This arrangement keeps air out of the system.

When the radiator cools back down, a vacuum is created in the cooling system that pulls open another spring loaded valve, sucking water back in from the bottom of the overflow tank to replace the water that was expelled.

I'm sure there should be a hose on the inside of the expansion tank, may be yours has fallen off. Is there any way to fit a tube to the inside of the cap??

ABS  parts list says no and none on mine since I've had it.

Non ABS says no as well though the drain hose is mounted separate to the cap.

I tried ringing.  Short answer is that if the radiator cap and overflow hose are working properly, then you just go by the overflow tank.  If the overflow hose is degraded where it fits onto the radiator cap neck  then you need to trim the hose and clamp it on properly.  If the radiator cap does not seal properly, then a new radiator cap is needed. Basically the same as most car radiator systems.

With the work I've done on mine recently I'd be curious about the state of your top two cooling hoses.

Mine are here at 150,000 kms or from 1999 when bike was new. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=2977.msg34375#msg34375

I wasn't to sure about my radiator cap so I replaced it anyway since just about everything else got replaced to do with the cooling system.

Over the years I've noticed that whenever I top the coolant to the high level on the bottle it generally goes back to the low level and stays there.
