An ST1300A owner - 10 years after our test ride.
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:49:04 PM »
I have been riding since the early 70's and slowly progressed up to the ST1300. It is probably the last new one sold in Townsville.
We have a 1987 CBR1000F that was getting a bit tired and when the ST1300 first came out, we test rode one - for four days touring in the Atherton Tablelands. We weren't greatly impressed with the two position, bolted screen, or the amount of heat on the pillions legs, so passed it over in favour of a newer, CBR1000F (1995). Now, ten years later, after much refinement, including all sorts of heat deflectors, an electric driven adjustable screen and the addition of fuel injection etc, they are to be no more.................so I grabbed one for $16,990 on the road with 12 months Registration.

Top buy and my wife much prefers the seat on this to the 1995 CBR1000F and most probably a VFR1200.

We've done many longer distance touring trips over the years, including some such as the 2011 and 2012 BDR's and the ST1300 should lift our comfort factor to a new level.

All I need to get for now, is a Cruise Control, preferable with a servo motor, rather than the vacuum operated variety, unless there are all sorts of horror stories out there about them.

Hey Gavo,
Did you end up buying the white ST11 from gumtree for your airport commuter?
Will you be using it to go to Moora on?

Hi jcrocombe.  Welcome to OzSTOC and congratulations on your purchase.  $17k is a great deal and I'm sure you will find the ST a capable tourer.  You'll find lots of advice and information here, all based upon broad experience.

Sounds like you waited just long enough to get the best bike at the best price.  Pity about all those uncomfortable years spent waiting.  At least you were on a Honda back then.
I'm sure the new servo driven CCs will be great.  However I've heard of no failures of the vacuum system, archaic as it may be.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Hi John,

Glad to see you finally bought a decent bike  :grin

Are you doing the BDR again this year?  Be good to catch up, I'm going again, as long as I'm back riding by then.  I stuffed my back at work nearly a month ago, and not looking even close to being able to ride again yet.  I was silly enough to think I could lift my daughter's 12kg hockey bag into the car yesterday, set myself back by 2 weeks  :cuss :cuss

About time you updated from the old CBR John.

Sorry about the FarRide to Bagara but it was worth the extra study.

Does this mean you are coming to Biloela with us then?  Will give you a call to arrange your attendance.

Hello Wendy

At present, the ST has more dust, than kilometres on it.

No BDR to the Red Centre for us in 2013, as we have no leave left.
We have put our names on the list for the Around Australia BDR in 2014, though.

Across America with the BDR in 2015 would probably be good, too, but too far away to decide.

Yep, take it easy on your back, you only get one.

Regards
John

The CBR is not quite "dead", yet.

Bargara by myself was OK, as I could come home via Mount Perry without anyone complaining about dirt roads in the rain....

Sounds like you can afford to shout a round of drinks in Biloela, then??

Biloela is still pencilled in. We haven't got the ST run in yet and I still need to fit the towbar and I really need a throttle lock, as my arm cramps due to previous injuries.

Regards
John
