Antique Still in Use
« on: June 16, 2013, 05:41:08 PM »
Thought you would enjoy this educational moment.

Can you name this strange old tool?

Do you know what it is?

Tobacco Smoke Enema Kit (1750s 1810s)
The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke
into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, but
primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims.

A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke into the rectum. The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration. Doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phrase “blowing smoke up your ass.”

As you are most likely aware this odd tool is still heavily used by politicians in every government today.

Amazing what doctors seriously thought was good for you.
I guess even some of today's practices will look silly viewed from a hundred years in the future.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

That is always the biggy if you are getting a down-your-throat-ascope and a up-ya-bum-ascope on the same day.  Make sure they do the top one first.  :H

Yup, makes sense.  No good going home with a bad taste in your mouth!
