New bike, new forum.
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:33:29 PM »
My user name is jwm, short for John Murray, and I live on Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW at a small village called Callala Bay.
I'm retired and have been riding bikes for the past 20 years, the last 12 of those have been on FJR's, had 3 of them. I wrote the last of those off on 13/07/13 when I hit a patch of gravel on a hair pin bend on the Narrabri / Bingara Road. I was advised yesterday by Shannons that because of a small amount of frame damage that it was a total loss. So today (less than an hour ago), I agreed to buy me a 2008 ST1300 with just under 23000km on the clock. The repairer actually advised me last week that in his opinion that the FJR was a write off, so I actually had an opportunity to look at the ST1300 I am buying last weekend (just in case).
Why an ST1300? Well, the FJR is more sports oriented and I figured me out that at 63 years of age that I probably need to slow down a little bit, change my attitude and look for something a wee bit more comfortable for the pillion. I had actually seriously considered an ST1300 4 years ago when I bought the last FJR but I was single and fancy free at that time and was happy to go with the sporty FJR again.
Usual stuff, a member of Ulysses but don't really ride with them. A member of the FJR forum and do a bit with them. Done a bit with FarRiders but not for over 2 years and I've done an IBA SS1600 just to see what it was like.
A mate of mine joined this forum a month or so ago, probably using the name Kingy or something like that, strangely enough he bought an St1300 after his FJR was written off.
Enough about me, looking  forward to making new friends, meeting interesting people and doing a bit of socialising with members of the ST community.

PS: Probably won't pick up the St until late next week.

Welcome from someone of similar age.
You'll find the ST1300 can hold its own in the twisties, not much less sporty than the FJR.  There are a couple of plusses, including the windscreen doesn't park when you shut down.  They're very similar bikes.  Five of the top 6 in the 2013 Iron Butt Rally were FJRs.  GS1200s were next, followed by Wings and a fair few ST1300s.
There are a few riders down your way.  Saaz is over in Canberra (rarely) and goes anywhere for a ride.  Usually does around 5000 kays per month, so don't try and keep up with him!
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Welcome John!

There are members down your way, such as A2Z, and those of us close enough by such as Canberra, southern Sydney and Batemans Bay, so perhaps an informal meet up is in order.  Just have to pick a spot where everyone gets a bit of a nice ride in :)  Kangaroo Valley always seems to come to the top of the list for some reason....

There are some gaps with no events on over the next few months so may just throw an event or two for whoever can go, even if it is only a few (or even one!)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, the OZSTOC community seems to be a little bit more active than the FJR community, at least in NSW. The FJR community is probably a bit more active in Qld.
Shiney, you want photo's, no need to wait, here are couple from Bikesales.com.au.

Welcome to the forum, John.  Nice lookin' red STeed barely run in.

A2Z and I (ST.George) r not far away from Callala Bay with A2Z at Horsely (Southern Gong) and I'm a bit further north at Mount Ousley. Very close 2 the local Honda STealer. There's a ride coming up Sunday week 2 Thirlmere Railway museum which is reputed 2 b very good. Might b tempting.

Thanks St George, I had seen the Thirlmere Ride on the forum and I will see how I go. I probably won't be able to pick the bike up until that weekend, hopefully on the Saturday, but arrangements are still to be finalised. If not Thirlmere, then I will certainly be at the next get together.

Welcome John. I had heard of your mishap from local members ( I was planning to be there for that weekend but family got in the way). Enjoy the 1300, you may find as others have that the ST windscreen/fairing does not have the wind noise problems of the FJR. And your new bike already has a tow bar fitted.  :thumb
