Learnt something this weekend
« on: October 07, 2013, 06:03:17 PM »
I learnt that the Police rigorously target speeders on the Bruce Hwy south of Marlborough QLD.

There's a stretch of the Bruce highway between Clearview and Marlborough (between Mackay and Rockhampton) where the posted limit is 110 km/hr.  It's perfectly relaxed riding at a speed I found naturally comfortable - somewhere between 110 and 120 - without having to constantly look down at your speedo.

However, at Marlborough the speed limit returns to 100 km/hr and the area south of Marlborough is heavily policed.  Got pinged for doing 114 km/hr, 3 points and mucho dinero.

That aside, I had a nice ride down to Rockhampton on the spur of the moment on Saturday, stayed the night and rode home Sunday morning.  Put about 800 km under Norma Jean's wheels (my ST1100 is white, remember the photo of Maralyn Munroe in the white dress standing over the grate in NYC?  My other bikes have been named after women's names in song titles, so my ST is named after Elton John's "Goodbye Norma Jean")

However, I reckon the open road speed limit should be 110 everywhere.  I wonder if there's any significant difference in accident statistics between that stretch of the Bruce Hwy between Clearview and Marlborough and the areas north and south of it.  I just felt so much more comfortable riding where the higher limit applied.

The Newell Hwy has a stretch between Peak Hill and Parkes where it comes back to 100 from 110. The main reason is nil overtaking lanes and there only being short sections where normal overtaking may be possible. The road will return to 110 once the remediation work has taken place. There have been enough crashes along this section to justify the reduction in speed until they make it worthy of being called a highway.
