OZSTOC Meet: Maryborough to Katoomba and back...
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:43:49 AM »
Hi Guys,
I am Super excited about the OZSTOC meet.
For most of you, I know, the ride will be a little Ho-Hum.
But for me It will be the Longest, biggest, most amazing trip I've ever done on the ST.
In prep, I've been slowly increasing my staying time from 4 hours, to 6, and now around 8 hours in the saddle before I can't stay on any longer.
I also got some wet weather pants for Christmas (I was wearing draggin cargos, but these are more comfy so I may use as all the time pants)
Also got my electronic gear sorted, GPS, GoPro Camera, and laptop bag...

My friend who I'm bringing with me on his 1100 hasn't done any long rides 4 hours tops. So he is equally excited...

After sitting down over a cold one on the weekend we've come up with an initial route:
We have the whole following week off so are going to take our time coming home.

Subject to change of course...

So if any other Victorians/Tasmainians want to come along, then they are more then welcome.  :hatwave

Have to have a look at the route when I get home. Might be able to meet up somewhere on the way from Canberra to Katoomba and take some of the more interesting roads.

I second that suggestion!

Other alternatives are down the south coast going through Pambula-Tathra (nice pub on the water with fantastic views) -Bemagui.  Going up the coast and through Kangaroo Valley is also a must.  I was also going to suggest going from Batemans Bay to Goulburn, then Taralga etc up to Bathurst. And a few circuits around Mt Panaorama.  Once you do that Taralga road I suspect you want to do it both ways!

And for any others, going into Blackheath from Springwood way may have big delays due to roadworks (it took me an hour a week ago), so I would suggest coming in from bathurst or some other way to bypass that part of the Great Western Highway.

Marcus,

Have a look at this link showing a route from Albury to Katoomba.  A lot more interesting than the Hume Hwy and a lot more twisties.

Thats another good variation. Just depends on what time you have, how much travel each day etc etc.  The Great Alpine Way from Wangaratta  is a great way to get across to the coast.

Hi,

Might I suggest a slight variation in your route in the woolongong area.

This video should give you an idea.

Seacliff Bridge is ok, but unless you stop and do a walk you don't seee much. The roads down to it are quite fun as long as those cars don't get in the way.

That bridge was in a Holden advert a few years ago. We stopped on the south side and walked back across it. It was interesting to read the engraved padlocks that people have put on the railings as memorials.

Looks like an EPIC trip plan Stringo - well done.

It is great to see you (and anyone) for that matter - building up your distance stamina leading up to the 'big one'. It all leads to a more enjoyable and safer experience for you guys.

I too always listen when the locals suggest things around their stomping grounds, as they only recommend 'must see' or 'must do' items. You will remember this trip for years to come.

It will be great to catch up again at the National Meet.

Cheers, Diesel

Hey Marcus - If you turn off at The rock on the way up and Head thru Collingullie, Coolamon, Ariah Park you can camp here at West Wyalong. Then I can travel with you thru Grenfell, Cowra and up over the hill to Blackheath. Its a much nicer route than the hume hwy and that bullshit Sydney traffic
