Marissa has her bike learners licence!!!
« on: January 08, 2012, 06:46:29 AM »
Hi All,
Happy to report that just prior to Christmas Marissa got her learners licence to ride a bike.  :thumbsup

She got a nice little Honda CB400 Super four for Christmas from Santa and is doing really well learning to ride thus far. She still has a way to go before she will be ready to do any group rides, but she is looking forward to being the first female rider on an Ozstoc RTE some day.

She has promised to not hang crap on any non Honda riders  :-++

Hey nice job...My wife is very unco so she won't be going down the path soon...

I can kind of relate to that Marcus. Marissa has done really well in her first two weeks. She rides well out on the open road. Her challenge is the low speed tasks. Some tasks she seems to be able to do really well in practice in the local carpark. But whether its just nerves or not, she has trouble doing the same tasks out on the road at times? She has the makings of a good rider and I'm sure in time she will become a safe competent rider.

It's been interesting teaching Marissa as there are some things that come naturally to her, and others that I have had to really think about what I do automatically, to be able to explain the process.

I've learned that not everyone has the same dexterity, or fine motor skills. So teaching Marissa tasks such as how to apply the front brake without rolling your wrist on the throttle, I've had to really think about what I do, and try to then explain how I do it.

I take my hat off to all the instructors out there.

Get Marissa to practice looking up the road to where she wants to be, it will make the slow speed handling a lot better. Dont look at where the front wheel is, as thats how to fall off.

Doing a decent riding course is the way to go. I have known/do know soem that have ridden for a while, still fear low speed stuff and corners, but nebver do the courses recommended to them.

Oh, and congratulations Marissa!

You have to in SA and I think the cost is around $600 and I'm glad I got licence ages ago.

The first link is to get your learners

http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transport%2C+travel+and+motoring/Motoring/Motorcycling/Motorcycle+licences/Preparing+for+RiderSafe+basic+training

and you must pass the second course to get your restricted licence

Thanks for the advice guys  :)
Yes, Brock that's good advice. I have Marissa looking well ahead, as well as keeping her head up and looking at about 90 degrees for when she's doing figure 8's.

What John has said about doing a course is absolutely right. At this stage I'm just teaching her the basic's to get her up and going.

After that she will do a proper riding course to obtain her licence. Then she will most likely attend a road craft course or two to advance her along the learning curve.

At the moment she's practicing mostly in local car parks and quite local roads to get a handle on the low speed stuff. At the moment her head is very much focused "inside" her bike, which is normal for someone who has only been riding for two weeks.

Once she gets the basic skills locked into memory, more of her head space will become free to focus on what's happening "outside" her bike. That will be the time to enrole her in a course.

We're also fortunate to have several riding instructors in our local Ulysses club branch who have been happy to give us advice and answer any questions we've had.

Barry,

Other little tips for Marissa:

To regulate your slower speeds, also good for 'U' turns etc, it's best to keep the rev's up (within reason) and 'ride' the rear brake. This is far easier that feathering the clutch.

When executing 'U' turns and the like, look where you want to end up, not where you're going. In other words, if you're doing a 'U' turn to the right, look over your right shoulder to a point on the road where you intend to end up, keep the rev's up, ride the rear brake, do the 'U' turn, release the brake and all should be well.

We get this taught to us on the Priority Pursuit Course. It's a lot easier, quicker and you can do a tighter turn.

Not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs but it's amazing how many riders don't know how to do this.

Good luck and well done Marissa.                                      :wht13

Me for one......................good on ya Roper!!

I always look to where I want to end up, but have never tried keeping the revs up & riding the rear brake!!  I'll give it a try next time I'm into a slow, tight, turn!

Cheers mate,
Baz

The rear brake trick is great for roundabouts. and the twistys. Using the rear brake just a bit causes the front to pull in a bit more.

Next time you are a bit hot into a corner and you dont think you will quite make it, just use the rear brake a little and around you will go. Not too much but cos then its down you go. Not sure if the rear brake trick works as well with linked braking.

for slow rideing i keep revs up, ride rear brake as well as trained pillion helped us enjoy several events of medium to large rides that ulysses host or partisipates.
ulysses club recomend further and ongoing rider training ( they offer fiscal insentives every 3 years) and with that advise wife and i took a "slow ride coarse" was the best thing we have done since starting to ride again (wife never being on a bike before). anyway! that was the first thing all the trainers tought the group we were with ( non ulysses). learnt heaps that day and recomend all riders new or old to do advanced coarses now and then. also if you have pillion try takeing them too, nisi and i were the first to do it with that school and the instructors were very happy with the outcome

Not sure if the rear brake trick works as well with linked braking.

Even with linked brakes the foot brake alone is not as effective as the hand brake is alone. I'm not sure on the 1300 but the 1100 has two pistons activated on the rear caliper (outer pair) and one on each of the font calipers (centre). Somewhere in the mix is a proportioning valve as well. To a certain degree washing off speed in a corner using foot brake alone does work.

I will have to uplaod a photo or two of Marissa on her bike. haven't taken any "on the move" pics as yet. I brought a Gopro camera today so should be able to fix that soon.

Here's one at Chrissy when she got the bike
