It seems a bit sneaky of the govt to bring in new rules and not loudly publicise them. As the NRMA reporter stated, it's a national road rule, so don't be surprised if the other states don't follow suit and, like this bunch, say little about it.

Yellow edge-line rule has been in Victoria for around 10 years (may be more, may be less).  So long ago, I don't remember if it was publicised.

It's enforced in the municipality I work for.  Penalty not as steep and as for stopping in a "No Stopping Zone".

Then it gets very testicle ..... from the dictionary:

edge line, for a road, means a line marked along the road at or near the far left or far right side of the road (except any road-related area of the road).

One interpretation of this is that if you are to the left of the yellow edge line, it is not an offence, unless you are in a road related area

Back to the dictinary:

road-related area see rule 13.

13            What is a road-related area

         (1)   A road-related area is any of the following:

                (a)    an area that divides a road;

               (b)    a footpath or nature strip adjacent to a road;

                (c)    an area that is not a road and that is open to the public and designated for use by cyclists or animals;

               (d)    an area that is not a road and that is open to or used by the public for driving, riding or parking vehicles.

Note   Vehicle is defined in rule 15.

         (2)   However, a reference in the Australian Road Rules (except in this Division) to a road-related area includes a reference to:

                (a)    an area so far as the area is declared, under another law of this jurisdiction, to be a road-related area for the Australian Road Rules; or

               (b)    any shoulder of a road; or

                (c)    any other area that is a footpath or nature strip as defined in the dictionary;

but does not include a reference to an area so far as the area is declared, under another law of this jurisdiction, not to be a road-related area for the Australian Road Rules.

So that means you can't be a smart ass and park the bike on the footpath because it's not parking next to a yellow line on the road.

They've got you covered.

The laws are written that way by lawyers so that they have to be paid by criminal parkers who can't understand the laws.

The Pollies just get a bright idea and then pay their lawyers (with your tax money) to frame the laws in as abstruse way as possible.
