Computer Stuff
« on: November 08, 2013, 08:53:44 AM »
Winston66,  Northampton,

A question for you computer gurus?

As I sit here trolling through the various forums and the websites that hold some interest and fascination for me, I am getting increasingly annoyed at the unsolicited content that keeps appearing on the pages that I am trying to read.
This content takes the form of many and various adverts,  etc, these pop ups can occupy up to one third and sometimes one half of the available screen space and crowd out the content that I want to read.
I there a way to block this crud, and stop it from appearing?
I hope that someone knows how.

Cheers Winston66

Winston66, i have been seeing this alot recently and there are varying reasons.
Most common is browser hijack and virus / malware infection.
What browser do you use to browse the internet?
What antivirus software are you running?
I will PM you my number and you can give me a call when you are online and i can remote help you.

Malwarebytes was recommended to me by a professional PC service company dude when I experienced a similar problem.  He installed and ran the free version, and the problem was instantly solved.

Thanks everyone,

One of our members , Pezz , very kindly has stepped forward and solved the problems for me.
He certainly knows his stuff. I do not know exactly what he did but the result is great, he has completely cleaned up my lap top's operation and done some full scans etc. it is just like a new machine again.
Thanks again for your help and consideration Pezz.
What a great bunch of people are on this forum, and it must be because we all ride ST's
and also what a great forum this is.

No dramas. And Malwarebytes was one of the programs I used StinkyPete. Use it pretty much daily as well as s couple of others.

Pezzz, how can we guard against browser hijacking, or what software can be used to remove the problem?  I understand that it is far less of a problem with Google Chrome than with MS IE Explorer.

Please don't use IE, I know it comes with the computer, but I think this program alone is the cause for 99% of peoples problems.

" Internet Explorer " ... The number one browser.... For downloading a better browser..... StinkyPete, the easiest way to defend from these things is habits. Check what else is bundled with software and software updates you download. Run a decent anti virus. We use Eset Nod32 products as they are cheap , very light on resources, and best of all work really well. Scan with Malwarebytes monthly. Overall , refrain from click click click done oops. Also clear your temp files regularly. And Marcus..... a Mac??? And yet you have always sounded so intelligent on here :-p ... Hahahaha

Hahaha.. yeah because I don't have to worry about this stuff. And all my work is mac based. And I can sleep easy knowing the Wife won't/can't click on anything suspect with her mac.

And with the intel chip in the macs these day instead of the powerPC chips, Macs now have access to almost everything a PC can do, only without bluescreening every two days hahaha

And if I must run a PC program (which is only one IRC mIRC I use crossover)

I run a HTPC though if that makes you feel better :D

Pezzz is absolutely correct when he says; "" Internet Explorer " ... The number one browser.... For downloading a better browser....." IE actually provides the highest number of badly created bits of software which are designed to force the reader into looking at stuff they REALLY don't want or need to see!!!, it almost invites invasive programs onto your machine!! PLEASE don't use it! I use Firefox, which is good, I have also used Chrome but I find it too thin a program, they advertise it as being a very light-weight browser and it is...too light weight! I also used to use Opera for a while but it got too fat and dumb to keep going.

You also need an effective firewall program operating in the background, I use ZoneAlarm Extreme, have done for some years and have never had a single really nasty virus from day one! It has trapped the few that tried, told me about them after it locked them up before they can actually do anything, and then it has asked me what I'd like to do with them. Even some instances where it can't immediately remove them, in these cases it has locked them away until the next time the machine is re-booted, then it's kicked them off as part of the power-up process. It's not free by any means, but it is painless to use and extremely effective!! It protects my basic machine, scans the Internet before I get to access anything (not that I notice any extended time periods), locks the backdoors for the machine, scans emails and all other messages for nasty's, and deals with them instantly. Current downloads are tested as part of the store and locked away if there is any problem at all.

Well worth the annual fee, give it a whirl!

Hey everyone ,
Thank you all, this is just fantastic, There is just so much that I do not understand about this computer stuff, I feel quite ignorant about all of this special type of knowledge that is needed in this new age, which has all of these new technical goodies, to play with, I even have problems getting my MP3 player to work.
Anyway I am not going to fret about my ignorance in these matters because the new mono wheeled trailer build is coming along quite quickly, and when I get tied of messing around with that I can jump on the ST. and go for a nice blast around the district.
Thank you all for your interest and advice, I will try to follow your suggestions.
Cheers, Winston66, Northampton WA.

mac's aren't immune.......I could tell you a few stories.....
they are just not 'targeted' as much as the micro$oft stuff....

Cheers

Kev....

Well... nothing is immune to idiot operators, at least macs need operator intervention to activate a nasty

No, no. no, no
I wasn't talking about you. Golly no. Don't think that.

I/O error usually stands for Idiot operator
K.I.S.S Keep it simple stupid
That kind of thing...
That's all I meant,
I was referring to things we say in the industry... getting malware on your computer is easy done so I was certainly not suggesting anything.

I was replying to Kev, pointing out that PCs can pick up stuff without the user clicking on anything, like through emails etc, marcos in word file, where as macs need the idiot operator to click on things. e.g. I/O error.

Hi Marcus,

Apology not needed.

I really did have my tongue in my cheek when I made that last post and I was only stirring for the sake of it, I guess that I was just sitting here bored out of my tiny little brain , cos its 40+ C outside and the workshop is not air conditioned and I can not get out there to work on my new trailer.

I only use pc and Linux. We have a few CENTOS servers as well as many Windows servers we look after and build asterisk phone systems. Never had anything really to do with macs except end users that have come from using macs in schools that don't know how to use Windows who then make it our problem when they can't interface with the domain or do something useful with their email client like multiple mailboxes etc because they convinced the employer that Mac was so much better.

Haha yeah I guess that's the biggest hurdle with mac and PC users who just use their computer as a google machine. Not understanding what each does good and bad.

Like Kev says I use both, Mac more then PC though. And personally, I'm in a production environment (semi IT guy/everything else) and I like how all my 25 macs and email/ftp server...wait for it...

"Just works"

Hahaha.

But like you guys said it's like discussing religion and/or politics to some people, I can see both arguments
