Police roll up sleeves for blood blitz

A group of Queensland Police Officers and staff visited the Red Cross Edward Street donation centre this morning as Queensland needs more than 10,000 donors to give blood this Christmas and New Year to secure blood stocks over the festive season.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service is concerned that many Queenslanders will take an extended holiday this festive season leading to a major drop-off in platelets, the shortest-lived blood product that is critical in the treatment of cancer patients.
To counter the expected drop-off, the Blood Service is launching a Blood Blitz campaign to boost donations between December 23 and January 3 – the time when donations could hit a critical low.
Commissioner Ian Stewart said that the group were only too happy to roll up their sleeves and save lives this festive season by donating blood.
