What wasn't seen!!!
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:08:39 PM »
Saw this in today's on-line newspaper...scary or what??

"Seth Muller walked out of Kingaroy Hospital thinking he was lucky to have escaped a motorbike crash with minor injuries.

But three days later the 15-year-old Maryborough boy was back in hospital where tests revealed he had a broken back, collapsed lung and kidney damage.

During Seth's overnight stay at Kingaroy Hospital, where he had X-rays taken, staff failed to identify the seriousness of his injuries.

His father Shane was shocked at the misdiagnosis. "Potentially this could have been absolutely horrible where he ended up in a wheelchair," Mr Muller said.

Queensland Health is reviewing the incident.

Dr's are a funny breed.

My wife dropped a large plate on her foot and severed her big toe.
Dr said it wasn't serious after xrays and stitched up her toe. 2 days later still couldn't walk, felt like there was still glass in the toe.
Went to our local Dr who removed the bandage and said. "Where is your tendon?" 6months later and several ops she is now walking ok.

Friends mother got admitted to the same hospital with extreme stomach pains. Xray and ultra sound confirmed "Too much to eat." Following day went to a 2nd hospital and found a twisted and dead bowel. Had to have 30cm removed.

A couple of days ago on the news, elderly lady has a fall and is taken to the same hospital in extreme pain. After tests, told to go home. Following day she is conveyed to ambulance to the same hospital and re-examined due to the extreme pain and now found to have a broken pelvis and other injuries associated to the fall.

Hospital is now carrying out inquiries???

On the rather minor end of the scale.

Some time ago while working on a press line doing parts for early commodore ute I cut my right wrist. I'd handled that part for years without issue but this time one of the trimmed edges went between my glove and my shift sleeve. I felt the sting, dropped everything and straight to the first aid room. Supervisor bandaged it up and took me to the local medical centre/workers clinic.

Doc took one look, 4 (I felt each prick) locals later all sewn up, bandaged and back at work with light duties for 10 days or so.

A few weeks later I notice a lump under the scar. No pain or anything but went to my local GP. She didn't know but sent me for an ultrasound which showed something but to find out more it was deemed to need exploratory surgery.

Turned out that I severed one of three tendons in my wrist.

My mate Phil who rides the Cam Am Spyder dropped his Hyasung (when he had it) on his right foot, after xrays it was determined that he had broken bones in his foot that required surgery, he was operated on and 5 screws were inserted to hold the bones in place, after numerous complications, including golden staph, he was sent home but months later was was still in terrible pain and could hardly place any weight on his foot, phil asked the doctor repeatably to have another scan done but the doc kept saying it wasn't necessary, after almost 2 years of pain he finally convinced the doc to have another scan done, and guess what.....he found another bone that was broken and hadn't healed...........so, another operation, now six months later, with his foot held together with seven screws, he still suffers pain when he puts any weight on the foot, and the doc has said there's nothing more he can do, so off to another specialist who now thinks there is a hole where the bone is joined that hasn't healed and is trapping a nerve, and he's now requiring further surgery!
Not a happy chappie I can tell you! :cuss

Well since we are telling war stories. This time last year they found a brain tumor ( which in round about way is how I ended up here.) But long story short it all went as well as you wish for that sort of operation. During my operation the whole sinus was packed with wadding. About three days or so after the op the nurses came an took it out. A month later when I was at the neuorsurgeon complaining of headaches he took a look up the old snoz and went Oh that dosn't look right. The trainee nurse had left most of the packing up there. Because of the risk of brain infection (which some would claim was not avoided) the packing had to come out immediately. Not being partial to hospitals I refused the surgeons  offer of emergency admission and told him to pull it out there and then. My wife who is a former nurse passed out when she witnessed it.

Why is it that a plumber, mechanic, or any other trade person can look at a project and tell you immediately what is wrong whilst a Dr, who is getting paid a larger wage than any tradie (sometimes) can make obvious mistakes like previously mentioned.

I'm in a business that if I kill or injure someone through the course of my work, I will be looking at gaol time or at least un-employment.

You know even with the stuffup which happened after the op I am eternally grateful that surgeons are as clever as what they are. I would be completely blind now if it wasn't for the operation I had.

Hoffy, we must work in the same industry because in my game it's everyone elses fault except for the idiot who actually did it.

OK if we are talking about visits to Hospitals then mine is that in early April last year I had a tumor the size of a ping pong ball removed from my skull just above my left ear. It turned out to be a terminally cancerous growth so now we wait and see. That's why I had to give up riding and driving and why I am permanently dizzy now. Oh well, what the hell??

That is very sad to hear but you appear to have the right attitude. (Certainly a lot better than mine I have to admit.)   In the end I was extremely lucky  I escaped only losing my sense of smell and taste and have numb teeth and some wonky facial muscles but that is pretty much it.

It seems unfair that you have lost the ability to ride which I am sure would have given you at least a temporary release from your plight.

Take care Mate.

Never realized Whizz.............."wait and see" is a tough game to play!!       I hope the day will come when you'll once again be able to ride and drive!

Guys, I have long since come to the conclusion that life is what it is, and there was a strong possibility that I would never have made it through the initial 36 hours from passing out to waking up after the brain operation. So, as far as I'm concerned, each day I'm still here is a major gift for me. In reality there was a 50/50 chance that I could have failed to make it through the first weekend so why should I be feeling down now?

All we have to do now is to sell this 5 bedroom mausoleum here in Ipswich so we can move back to Adelaide and have the family around us  :grin :grin
