ST11 Operating oil pressure?
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:50:53 PM »
Does anyone know what the standard operating oil pressure is on the ST1100 is?
Also what would be the absolute maximum oil pressure ie. at redline revs?
I ask because I would like to have an oil pressure gauge with a 270 degree scale and have the max pressure at close to full scale.  (As an example) I cant see the point of a 0-140 psi gauge when it will only ever get to 50 psi, so only ⅓ of the gauge will be used.
I would appreciate your help.

Operating range of pressure switch is 57 to 71 PSI at 5000 RPM with engine at normal op temp (180C) according to the book.

At red line???? who goes there??  The oil pump pressure by pass would be working by then.

Why the concern/need may I ask?? I have never hear of an ST with an oil pressure problem and at those revs (5000 to 10000) I would want my eyes on the road not the instruments. at 5000 RPM, the speed in top gear would be around 150KPH

Thanks Brock for the information.
The question is trying to find the maximum oil pressure not the desire to redline the machine.  Its actually trying to find the oil pump bypass pressure isn't it?  As explained I wanted to consider a gauge that has a meaning scale suited to purpose.

No concern expressed just interest.  I like gauges, rather than idiot lights.  The pressure switch is probably a fairly low threshold switch and tells me nothing of how much the oil is thinning on a really hot 45 degree day. A gauge gives some hint and insight as to whats happing.  I like that.   It also gives me another way to see the difference between new oil and what pressures it runs, and oil after thousands kms down the track.  I like being comfortable in knowing.   I have enough confidence that when I ride I can handle a glance at a gauge or two from time to time.

Youre over thinking the ST a bit, its a bike designed to get get on and go and enjoy the rode. The trouble with gaugesis, that they take your attention away f4rom the road while you try to read and interpret the result, The lights tell you that a problem existd, and you had better attend to it. Sts go forever, I have never heard of one that had an oil pressure related problem, and some have been going for many 100thousands of Ks.

I doubt that anyone can give you more detail on the pressures, as the only thing to go on is the info available in the maintenance manual

I would expect the oil pressure to not go that much above the quoted specifications regardless of revs.  Once the oil heats up it is very thin, like sewing machine oil, so oil pressure will be lost as it goes through the plain bearings providing lubrication.  Like Brock, I have never heard of any problems, but I expect someone out there has put on an oil pressure gauge as well as a proper coolant temperature gauge.

Try this;

So any gauge that goes to 100psi (pretty standard) should do the trick
