You might need to add a few more batteries to the ST first!

I was about to ask how this is done, but now I know (I think...):

Tesla coils can also be used to create music by modulating the system's effective "break rate" (i.e., the rate and duration of high power RF bursts) via MIDI data and a control unit. The actual MIDI data is interpreted by a microcontroller which converts the MIDI data into a PWM output which can be sent to the Tesla coil via a fiber optic interface.

For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

About 12-15 years ago, I met a man in Sofala (near Bathurst), who has a Tesla coil, who also say if he turns it on, it will disrupt the flow of electricity in a 50 mile (80 k) radius. As the power companies are aware of this, they've told him - warned him would be more likely - that should he turn it on, they'll send him the repair bill.

His name is Richard Wigglesworth and he has a museum of sorts two doors up river from the township. He also has a replica (it could be working by now) model of a steam driven power station; he built it himself by himself from parts of the old Bunnerong Power Station in Sydney.

An interesting 'character' to say the least

You realise that Wigglesworth is a distant cousin of mine.  W. E. Johns fans will 'get it".

When I was a teenager and playing with things electrical an older mate commented on a rather large switch I'd acquired saying "Mate, you could switch Bunnerong with that!"
One of those things in the memory banks that you old guys pull to the fore every now and then.

Why would a Tesla coil damage the grid?  I would have thought it just drained power the way Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown did to time travel.

Its not so much a damage the grid thing, as a wide band RF blanketing thing. I remember the guys at the University of WA  saying that if the room they used for theirs, wasnt heavily shielded then it wipe out tv, radio and other electronic signals for miles around.

Nowadays, it would probably wipe out the interweb and mobile phones.... Oh the horror..
