Brake pad wear

Today cos., I was getting bored I wanted  do some maintenance and started to check out the St1300's in the shed and I started with a cursory look at the brake pads, on both of the steeds.
I was slightly surprised to notice that on both bikes and common to all of the calipers that the pads on every position were showing to me what I consider to be  some un even wear pattens.
What I noticed was that in every instance the pad that was on the inside (next to the wheel) was showing more wear ,  they were approx. only one half as thick as the material that was left on its opposite member.
The calipers were able to move easily on the pins and the brakes were not binding or showing any resistance to rotating the individual wheels. In operation the brakes work flawlessly.
My question is this,
Is this sort of wear on the pads normal, and has anyone else observed anything similar?
If this is not normal what would be the cause , and is there an easy fix?
Any suggestions?
