If the bike is ex cop, then it should be as simple as fitting the lights and electronics. Of course this depends on whether the bike is 1100 or 1300 and how much de modding has been done.

For my 1100, fit a solo seat, electronics rack and hump maybe 2 hrs. fit electronics lights radio (some wiring to do) may be a day.

Would be a tad unusual to go that way tho.

The 13s they have in the UK don't have as much police specific stuff as the ST11 (right hand switch block, extras wiring down the back) as the new police stuff is contained in a new electronic module that I think can be adapted to most bikes.  I am more interested in when ex police ST13s, FJRs and GTR14 come on the market.  I will be interested in Tackleberry's take on them, as the he did not seem to like the Beemer...

Only a few RT's left in NSWPF .  I went through 2 of them.  Nice comfy bike with a protective fairing, handle well but I'm a not a big fan of the boxer engine.  My 2nd RT dropped an exhaust valve with nearly 5K on the clock and the engine seized on me.  BMW put it down to a problem with the fuel mapping.....it was running too lean and hot.  We had a number of bikes do this along with final drive failures and electrical gremlins in the engine immobliser were common faults.  By far the biggest problem was waiting for up to 6 weeks for major components to be shipped from Germany for repairs as BMW do not stock a lot of stuff in Oz.   So, from my experience with BMW I wouldn't own an ex-police bike or otherwise.

Just about to receive my second FJR.  Good machine!  Plenty of poke, handle well....lack a bit of foot peg clearance.  They're a bit tiring to ride as they require a bit of muscling around, fairing isn't as protective but they're very reliable.  I've got just over 60K on mine and all I've had replaced was the rear shock at about 45K.  Our bikes are maintained over a 2 yr contract.  They go to auction with between 60 to 90K on them.  I'd be cautious buying one unless you know where it's from and what its been used for.  Most HWP bikes are flogged and are dropped a couple of times during their service life.  They're usually washed with a pressure cleaner and aren't always kept undercover.  Saying all that, some bikes which have been personally issued are loved and cared for by motorcycle enthusiasts and would make good buying.

Definitely seen the emergence of the FJR's on the Police beat here in Qld, but haven't seen any 1300's out there yet. Is that on the cards?

Diesel I go back to work tomorrow after leave.  Out first ST1300 arrived only a couple of weeks before I went on leave so the bloke should have done at least 100km by now.  I will see the rider and let you know any problems, but our fleet will be basically what the rider wants to replace his ride with they will get.  There shouldn't be any dramas as both ST's and FJR's have been performing very well, and riders have been reporting no dramas as far as I'm aware.

I ride an FJR at the moment like DU, but I am a hell of a LOT more critical about those friggin BMTroubleU's pieces of crap than he is.  I would have been happy only waiting for 6 weeks for parts.  My old bike sat for 3 months without a trace of the friggin tool (BMW held only) and parts to get it running before they decided to stop wasting time and get it replaced.  The electrical fault with the starting system lasted eight months without any idea by the local dealer using BMtroubleU diagnostics and even their own mechanics couldn't solve it.  Comfortable for long distance, and great ABS, but other than that they have NOTHING that would attract me to them, unreliable, too bloody expensive, and time wasting pieces of crap.  Even our local dealer has tried to give back the dealership several times and has offered to pay any penalty just to get rid of them because they're too hard to deal with.

Leaving topic now... blood pressure dropping again to normal...  in.. out.. in.. out.. breathing returning to normal instead of cyclonic pressures.

I only have around 36 000 on my Feejer in just over 12 months, and ours get sold around 80 000km from what I've been told.  I also agree with DU about knowing the rider and the way they treat their ride before you consider buying an ex-work bike.  Although most bikes are bullet proof, you could very easily get one that has had little problems not fixed immediately, which may cause problems.

We had a few of the harleys in Canberra for a trial run, basically for ceremonia duties. Haven't seen them on the road though..

Well they are Harley's so you wouldn't actually expect to see them on the road...would you?? in the workshop most likely. Why would anyone want to buy a hobby instead of a means of transport?
