Went for a ride today.... AWESOME!
« on: May 10, 2014, 07:16:18 PM »
Not one to boast - but I think even some of the most seasoned riders will find my efforts today, hard to match

I don't have a Spot Walla thingy, so what I'm about to tell you may seem a little implausible to some, and as I cannot verify it, you'll have to take my word for it!     :p

I wanted an early start for this epic undertaking, and I was to have a pillion as well, so extra effort in planning was a MUST.

We donned our MC gear and headed to garage where I performed my usual pre-ride routine of giving STella the once over, and adjusting the tyre pressures to the usual levels. All good now - time to head off....

I warmed the bike up, set the bluetooth coms, earplugs in, set the gps for the first waypoint etc etc etc...

I then straddled the bike - ready to depart, kicked the sidestand up, selected 1st gear - then this...

I rode precisely 2.5 inches for the day!   My clutch cable snapped, the bike lurched forward and stalled. And that's where she remains to this very minute!      :||||

I challenge any of you to have had a shorter ride than that!

Looked at Marianne and said "Right! Looks like we're going in the car!"       :fp

Funny thing though, the preparation and unpacking for riding 2.5 inches is exactly the same as riding 400kms.    :rofl

Hope you enjoyed this little anecdote.

Cheers Diesel

Yeah!  When did you get the mod done on Stella?

Great ride report, though.
Tell Marianne to call me when she wants a longer ride on a red ST13.  Lake Cargelligo coming up soon.   :grin

Well at least you didn't have to sit on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck to take you home or the workshop.  :thumb

I have been on similar rides. Going out for a day ride, looking forward to it, but did not even get to start the ST11..pool of red under the bike.  Alloy elbow busted, glad it was not out on the road.  Also have had a flat tyre so did not go far that day either.  Oh, and one day a fouled spark plug, quick replacement but on the way 10 minutes late.

Once planned an Easter Sunday ride with my wife and my sons mate.  Pushed the bike out of the Garage and closed the door, started to walk back to the bike and noticed A strip of canvas on the rear tyre.  Pushed the bike back into the garage.  So didn't ride it that day.    However........

My sons father had a Harley sitting unused at home as he was overseas, so I borrowed it for the day and had a great time  :runyay until my first breakdown on a Harley.  :||||   The generator decided to stop charging and the battery went flat and it wouldn't start after refuelling.  And then it started to pour with rain.  After many attempts to push start it  :H  we went and bought jumper leads, and tools and got access to the battery on the wife's Suzuki Burghman and jump started it.  Then had to re-assemble the Suzuki in the pouring rain.

Proceeded to ride home down the Bruce Hwy, not stopping for anything.  Got to Anzac Avenue lights and it hiccuped while waiting at the lights, but just kept running.  Rode up and into the owners garage where it gave one last cough and wouldn't re-start.   :thumb
Cheers,
Gary

Haha! Thanks all for the entertaining replies.

Oh, and spot on Brock. Fixed now.  ;-*

I changed the clutch fluid and bled the system today - took STella out for a blast up the range - all good.     :thumb

Should have seen this coming.... take note folks...

Neutral was becoming gradually harder to find when parking the bike - kept going up and down past it; and...

Clutch travel to its bite was getting less and less until it failed in a spongey heap. A good clean out and bleed soon had her back up and running beautifully!

Also - gear selection is quite a bit smoother and more positive now too.    :thumbs

one's garage is a great THE BEST place to have a component failure!     :clap     :rockon

I also forgot that coming back from WA on the old Suzuki the alternator decided to not charge somewhere before Dubbo.  I put a battery charger on overnight, turned the headlight off and push started where possible. Got as far as the top of Northbourne avenue in Canberra a few kms from home at that time  :||||  I had a ute at that time so got a mate to pick me up.  Could have happened in far worse places.  On the way over to WA the coils melted and took out the electronic ignition in the Adelaide Hills.  Had the original points back home  :|||| but found some in Adelaide and some coils. The joys of travel...

Sounds like that's when you realised you needed Honda reliabilty...

And Diesel- did you replace your clutch oil at 36,000 kays as per the maintenance schedule?

Nah.  I didn't either, but got away with it.     :whistle
