Temp Guage

Just a random question, my temp guage seems to me alittle high when idling at lights, I have had the bike checked over and no issues, radiator flushed a new temp sender put in this morning, the engine doesnt feel or smell hot, so now im thinking its the guage itself?'

where does your bike sit when its warmed up and idling????

If im cruising at highway speeds it sits just above the lower mark, if im in stop, start traffic it sits between the E an M in TEMP.

If at stand still, then needle sits at around 2/3 to 3/4

If it's not going off the scale and drops back when you get some airflow don't panic. Mine will get fairly high at times, up to 3/4 as Brock said but it never goes higher once the fan cuts in and always drops back as soon as I get clean air flowing through the radiator. I was surprised how much difference there is between being behind a car at 60kmh and being in clean air at the same speed.

Under normal riding my temp gauge sits about 1/4 of the normal white range. A trip down to the city will see the gauge rise to about half way before the fan cuts in while sitting at the lights. But that's my bike and no two gauges on identical bikes/cars will read exactly the same. If the temp lowers a little just after the fan cuts in then that's normal. Depending on the length of the stop the fan may switch on/off a few times.

The gauge is an indication of the temp and providing it is with the normal range all should be ok. The sensor in most vehicles is located at/near the hottest point in the cooling system which on our 1100s is just in front of the thermostat.

The thermostat switch located on the LH side of the radiator controls the fan on/off to keep the temperature within a defined temperature range.

What your seeing on your gauge may just be normal for that bike especially if everything else has been checked out.

its just when idling at the lights, it rises quickly (well to me) anyway, just have never had a bike do this before,
the cap is new, everything has been checked, so i am sure its just me getting used to the new bike,

under normal riding conditions, no hassle at all :)

I was going to post this same Q tonight (promise), I have had my ST for only 4 months an had noticed  the same temp readings, when riding mine is between the min and half, say 1/3rd in traffic it goes up to 3/4rs but as soon as I'm rolling again it drops back to the 1/3rd mark, I had the bike checked my a mechanic who changed the coolant but couldn't find any leaks etc.
It still freaks me out to see the gauge at 3/4rs whilst in traffic, tho I do live in the NT...

i even changed the sender lol probably didnt need it, but what the hell

like u said its weird to be in traffic and 3/4 or little high n not freak, but roll her off and down she comes,


so i just live with it, im in Qld also, so it gets hot :)


love it but a great bike

Honda probably should have done what most cars do, which is the gauge does not move much when operating normally.  On the Trophy it normally sits on 4 bars, goes to the next one when hotter than normal, then the fans kick in some time later if needed but still on the 5th bar. The temperature range from normal highway to fans on is the same as the ST1100 - normal 89c, fans on at 103c - but it seems less dramatic.

I have had my ST1100 for 5 years and has always done the same. normal temp about 1/3 across gauge, stopped in traffic it will go to 3/4 within 2 mins then the fan comes on and it drops to 1/2. Start moving and it goes back to 1/3. just seems to be how they is

1/3 was normal operating on my 1100 too, at a standstill in city traffic if I had to ride through a city it would climb towards 3/4 but I used to interrupt its accent with a flick of the toggle switch to the thermo fan and return smartly back to which it came before the thermo did its thing........

 1/3 is normal for me but, I too have an override switch so I bring in the fan early if I am stuck in traffic. It would come in around 3/4 on its own. Just being safe,
