160,000 and climbing

Its only 160,000kms on a 96 ST1100.  Would have been a MILEstone in the old days  :rofl



And for those who have asked about where the temperature guage normally sits, here is the needle when the fan on mine kicks in (did it a lot yesterday in 30c plus heat and going less than 30kph hehind a triathlon field for an hour or so.  When riding at normal speeds mine sits right in the middle of the E.  temperature guages vary, as later ones don't have TEMP.

Cool - 100,000 miles (or so).  Should be nicely run in.

Not far behind you at 138,000 for my 99 model

Did you do timing belt at 150,000kms

Timing belt done at 151,000kms.  I helped do one at about 180,000kms, but it was a 2000 model.  Specified interval is 144,000kms, but there is some leeway built into that I think.  Better safe than sorry though, as the ST11 engine is an inteference one (ie valves hit pistons if the belt breaks)

Performance wise, I don't think it goes any worse than when I got it (70,000kms) and probbaly not much different to new. A bit of a testament to the overengineering in there.  ST13 looks to be the same, as there are ones around with well over 100,000 miles.

Not sure on the 144,000 you quote as the manual I have says inspect at 100,000 and replace at 150,000.

I all ready have the belt but what ever I read about replacing the belt nothing is mentioned of any gaskets etc that need to be replaced. Though I'm hesitant I should be able to do this myself.

One of my previous bikes was a very cheap and well used Honda 750K1 and timing chain broke on that. It sat in my back yard until I gave it away. New owner eventually restored it. I bought a CX500 and 2 years later got the 1100 in May 2006.

You are right that the Honda manual says replace at 150,000kms, but the 90,000 miles interval it says converts to 144,000kms - I had the latter figure in my head as I obviously spend too much time on US sites....  So I went for the metric longer period - obviously we get better bits!  The valve clearances also do not exactly convert, so there is alos some leeway on what is right.

I did not replace any gaskets. the only one to look at is the timing cover one. It just seals against dirt getting in, so a good clean seemed all that was needed as it looked in good condition..  The clutch cover did not have to be removed in the two I have replaced, as the plastic timing cover can be removed easily enough.  Replacing the water pump every second belt seems to be the go, but I will let you know if I get that far.....
