Portable jump starters
« on: July 24, 2014, 09:28:22 PM »
Hey guys & girls, i have seen on this site a reference to the Antigravity Jumpstraters from the US.
We'll guess what?
I called into one of my customers today and blow me down he has a similar unit on the shelf here in WA.
He has them on the shelf for $129.50 and when I told him about the forum he has generously offered any OzSTock member 15% discount.

The Company is: Batteries Plus in Osborne Park WA. (08) 9444 6188. Or www.batteriesplus.com.au
You must ask for Darrin Wells and let him know you are from the OzStock forum and he kindly knock off the 15%.
Sorry I don't have any pictures.
Regards, Tom.
Regards,
Tom, aka Panman50.

That's better than any of the offerings on eBay.

That company is selling them cheaper on Gumtree :-(

Same shop on Gumtree
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/osborne-park/other-parts-accessories/portable-jump-starter-battery-pack-app-742-lithium-powered/1051440977  $119.95

15% discount on $129.50 = $110.08

Wonder if they'll knock off 15% on Gumtree?  ($101.96)
Cheers,
Gary

I very much doubt he could afford to drop 15% on the Gumtree price.
What it all boils down to for most of us is the cost of postage/freight.
Whatever it is, it will beat anyone else buying out of the States as some of us did.

And on that note, I recently bought an Antigravity one off e-bay which included the very comprehensive lead pack for $118.00 delivered to my door.
And Batteries Plus have updated their stock price to $135.00.
And finally the WA model is 120Amps whereas the US one is 200Amp.
Just saying.

A question for the tech-sperts:

How come these antigravity lithium batteries can crank a starter motor 20 times, yet can only recharge a phone 5 times or run my laptop for maybe 2 hours?

From the Antigravity FAQs page:
"Our 16-cell  is a 16 amp hour (PbEq) yet puts out an incredible 480 Cold Cranking Amps"

PbEq means Lead/Acid equivalent.  16 Amp hour means it can sustain an output of 16 Amps for one our or 8 amps for 2 hours or 4 amps for 4 hours or 1 amp for 16 hours.

Most phones take an hour (or more) to recharge, (usually also Lithium/ion batters) and often draw more than an amp when charging. So 16 divided by the charging current of the battery is the limitation on the number of charges that can be achieved.

Also just like a lead/acid battery there is a limit on how low the Antigravity batteries can go "2) You can ruin the battery if you let it drain to below 10.5v volts!!! This is true of ANY battery, lead/acid or lithium. "

When starting a vehicle the battery can deliver 480 Amps (when cold) for a few seconds.  This is due to the way the chemical process stores the energy and the internal surface area of the conductors inside the battery.  A bigger surface area can deliver more current.

Also from the same page
"4) DO NOT ABUSE the battery…. These batteries express extremely high amperage and can get over heated if you keep cranking a bike repeatedly over 7 seconds multiple times in a row. Though they are made to start your bike with fantastic results the can become over heated if you keep trying to crank a bike that just isn’t starting. 500 Cranking Amps can generate heat extremely quickly a couple cranking attempts if fine… long term cranking of 500 cranking amps is not good for anything and can damage the starter and the battery."

More information is here.

Thanks Gary.  Lots of good info there, including not to use a regular trickle charger.
It's no wonder they crank fast- they throw over 13 volts where a lead/acid's max is 12 on a good day.

Dont forget, that the phone/tablet might be drawing 2 amps or so, but that is at 5 volts not 12. Yes you do loose a little power in the conversion, so as a rough guestimate  that woudl be 1 amp at 12 volts.

Of course, Murphy's (sod's) law states that if you need to charge your phone from it, then the bike battery will need a jump as well and the nifty device will be flat as welll :|||| :|||| :||||
