If I'm careering down a hill with no brakes I want to be in change of the device I'm sitting on.
Interesting at the end, the parallel electric tape - I wonder how quickly you would stop if you hit a cow.

Watching "off-ride" clip, there is a continuous stream of "cars" coming down the track, so it wouldn't work for you to have a brake- you'd get clobbered from behind. It doesn't look as fast from the side.
