thirst work riding .... what do you do?

It can be thirsty work riding  ..... particularly up here in NQ!

i dont like the idea of a camel back as they interfere with the airflow on the jackets.

What do you boys and girls do to keep the thirst at bay while riding ?

I prefer not to have anything on my back ever so for most of our day/overnight rides between 100km and 400km I take a cooler bag in the top case. Usually every 100kms we'll stop, walk around etc for 10/15 minutes. Even on our regular 110km shopping over to Port Pirie we'll toss a couple drinks in the cooler bag. The bag comes in handy for putting food that needs to be kept cold on the return trip.

It's been awhile since we've done more than an overnighter (even with trailer) but on longer trips the eski is usually in the trailer.

If you use a Tank Bag you can buy a Hydration bladder from a Camelbak and have that in your tank bag.....they come between 1ltr and 3 ltr and a few various shapes.

I freeze a bottle of water, and carry it in my pocket..... even on a hot day, it takes a couple of hours to thaw completely.
(Ah!... the beauty of a flip-up helmet... no need to stop and remove it for a drink...)

My doctor has advised that putting anything in drinking water will make it absorb into the body much quicker.    It works with sports drink powder, cordial, fruit juice, a bit of softdrink, or anything else.    In the hot weather, I use a bit of sports drink powder in the two litres of drink that I carry in the top box.

I stop at a servo and get a drink.

The truck stops have showers, and I've been know to stick my head under the shower for a bit, on the really hot days.

Me too, though I put one or two frozen 1.5 L bottles of water in the pannier.  Even water that has heated is good for you, it's water afterall and you need water for rehydration.  I put about 200 mL of diet tonic into the bottom and fill the bottle with water just to kill the taste of the local tap water.

If you are carrying a couple of bottles of water with you take along some Hydralyte satchels or tablets and use them in every second bottle to help keep electrolyte levels up on a hot day.

Or a bottle of water. Or a supermarket, or a public drinking fountain, or a tap somewhere.

While I am still employed and every bike ride is a holiday, I like to treat myself to a little gift such as a cool drink from a fridge or a coffee etc.

I also carry water on the bike but when I go on a long run, room seems to be a bit of a problem and 2 or 3 large bottles of water in a top box can cause me a bit of frustration.

Plus I like pulling into a servo, especially on long isolated roads between Perth and Adelaide, you get to see some very different people and machines.

That's why we bought the trailer.......plus food etc. for two/three days for trips like the Nullarbor

Done that trip a few times on the bike plus 2016 coming up. Though I avoid the service stations unless I need to use one for fuel/shower

On the bike that is my world, what fits in the panniers and top box is all you need, leave the just in cases  at home.

Swag, sox, jocks, maybe a spare t shirt and a few minties to chew on..........wind in the face blue sky and so on and so on.

OK I will stop and get ready to go back to work so I can pay for the dream.

I feel cheated.......all I have ever seen is 'roos, either dead or alive.

I added 1 roo to the kill count coming across the Nullabor (before it was bitumen all the way).... but that was a long time ago, and I will save the story until listeners are suitably 're-hydrated' and comfortably resting after a days ride.

Actually, my last roo culling effort was only 10 years ago, lacal area here, and I proved that the Bol Dor front disks sliced, diced, gutted, skun and beheaded the roo..... buts that's another story to be told in front of a warm fire.....

We use the bike more than the car just because of the fuel cost. Any major shopping for us is 110kms away so bike makes sense.

As for crossing the Nullarbor on the bike I've only ever done that on my own 4/5 times.......so trailer allows for tent etc. and independence and free overnight accommodation......leaves the side cases for spare fuel and top case for what I might need during the day (camera, wet weather gear etc.).

have been doing it for years, it is one of the first things packed on my trips now

I carry a bottle of water in my top box but seldom ever use it, even on long rides I don't really get thirsty, we'll usually stop for coffee somewhere along the way, but that's about it. On a really hot day I might take a small swig of water, but even then it's only very seldom. I've never felt a need to have a drink while riding.

I'm a bit of a camel like you, Couch.
I try to avoid water.  I've seen what it does to metals and my insides aren't that tough.  I'll stick with coffee also.
