That "double up" feature is the curse of Google Maps.  Once it happens you're pretty much stuck with it unless you use "undo" immediately.  Trying to fix it just makes it worse.

The solution?  Use a GPS- still far from perfect.

Real world fix- use the road signs to your next town.    :grin    :thumbs      :crackup

I tend to use intermediate way points if using Directions on Google Maps.

If going from Mackay to Cairns, I'd break it up into stages such as Mackay to Bowen, Bowen to Townsville, Townsville to Innisfail, Innisfail to Cairns.  That way Google traces the path you want and you can get intermediate distances and times as well.

If Google shows a path off from the path you want to take, you can hold your cursor on the path and move it to the road you want to take.

Ask for a trip from Mackay to Townsville, Google Maps will give you the coast road (Bruce Highway).  If you wanted to go inland and up to Chartres Towers and out to Townsville, just place your cursor over the shown route (a dropdown box saying "Click to move route" will appear), click and hold on your cursor, and move the route to a road you want to use.

EG:  click on the blue route shown at Bowen and move it south and west to the next north/south road and release, the route will now show SW out of Mackay, north to Chartres Towers and east to Townsville.

Which is fine until Google decides to add in a little side trip due to a slip of the mouse.  It happens often in more densely populated areas of the map.  If you don't notice it and hit "undo" immediately, it becomes part of the plan.  The longer you spend trying to fix it, the worse it gets.

There's your problem, there's no "densely populated areas" up here in tropical QLD   :grin

I noticed that when I tried to get Google Maps to "misbehave" on the back road to Townsville.  It's impossible to get lost unless you visit a farm somewhere.

Same here but my GPS app can do that as well so Google is more for looking at the road surface to see if it's dirt or not. Google generally selects the fastest route (time) rather the shortest (distance) or economic (compromise) one.

Scroll in closer, this will eliminate as many other rout options and you need to delete those from your rout list you no longer need before you make any sizeable rout changes with the click and drag.

The double ups come from/ result from...

1 often used sections of previous routes...a sort of default the program thinks you might be asking for.
2 the data stored in pre existing rout lists...any and all your saved or unsaved rout's from the past...as above.
3 the data currently optioned in your work list now. Your list of towns you have just been working with.
4 dropping the dot too far outside the cursor aperture...not dropping it on a road that's inside the unseen cursor aperture.

Crikey, Gatey.  Did you swallow a computer lexicon?

Lexicon? Is that some sort of car Biggles?

All cursors have a field of view they work with. The aperture.
Most automaticly scale as you scale a map in or out. Some like a CAD drawing program can have the size of that aperture selectable.

I zoom in and then drag the route and then zoom out.
Cheers,
