A sad ending for a once noble beaST.

Mechanicals are good(I was going to change timing belt at next service), basically written off due to bodywork, bent forks and headstem.

Good luck from now on Hendo - hope your insurance gives u a fair result and u recover quickly.

There r a lot of good value 13's around but u r probably used to the smooth acceleration of the 11 as against the surges of the 13 (well mine does anyway).
BTW looking 4ward to trying your 3XL jacket, thnx 4 sending that.  :clap

Thanks for all the well wishes. Recovery is looking good, see the spinal specialist on the 10th Feb.

As to what happened:
Accelerating in traffic from traffic lights when the driver in front slams his brakes on for no reason. I grabbed mine, front locked and I didn't even have time to let go and reapply before I was down and the bike slid into an oncoming stationary van. This only happened at about 45-50 km/h. The damage to the bike was caused from hitting the van, the damage to me was from being hit on the top of my head from either the top box, rear tyre, or trailer.



This happened on the 19th December, Insurance company were good if a little slow ( XMAS Holidays etc.). 

Will catch up at an RTE sometime soon

I guess this is a very timely reminder to everyone about plenty of space between you and the wally in front.

I am a prime offender in this bad habit.

Very sad you had to teach me this lesson.

Just wondering as to the bigger picture and all possible influences that may have contributed to the incident. Is this a real life lesson that we can all learn from, possibly about ABS and/or trailer towing?

Does your trailer have it's own brakes?

John,

There are lots of things that influenced the accident of course. Just to mention some that may have influenced it were:

-Arriving in Adelaide in peak hour Friday afternoon after 700+ km  of highway driving
-Trailer weight on the rear ( trailer is a Classic Ultralite with no brakes. Empty weight 60 kg plus I had about another 25kg in it)
-No ABS on Bike.

One of the things that always worries me on longer rides and especially for those that do IBA's etc is the change in traffic conditions at the very end of the ride. I had prepared myself mentally for the change, I even stopped at the last rest stop coming through the hills for a couple of minutes break and a stretch. I had done about 10 kms of stop start traffic before the accident.

The trailer of course changes the braking dynamics of the bike. It always tended to push the front down a little more  as you would expect. I had previously practised emergency braking with it on so I knew what the effect was.

However the biggest factor was the Numpty putting his brakes on for no reason, even the guy who was behind me and thankfully pulled up in time commented that he put his brakes on for no reason. Probably the same type of guy that pulls in front of truck at a set of lights when it is already breaking hard, thinking he has plenty of room.
