G'day STriders,

I have just replaced a faulty HID setup with a new setup purchased from OzSTOC member Roadrunner who no longer needed them.

The retired HID was a 50W 4500K setup and the new HID is 35W 6000K. The new light is on the left in the pic below and as u can c it is bluish compared to the yellowish 50W 4500K light on the right.





Can any of our electricsters kindly xplain 2 me the purpose of some of the items below:





The old faulty HID is on the right. The new system is on the left:
1) the new xenon lamp with foam protective sleeve;
2) the new slimline ballast;
3) don't know what this is 4;
4) don't know what this is 4 either - wasn't required in the new setup coz that part from the old setup still works. BTW this component has an inline fuse in it of unknown wattage.

Item 4 may be a relay, *( fuses are rated in amps not watts)

3 may be a filter to stop Radio Frequency emissions

2 is most likely to generate the high voltage needed to run the HID bulbs

Regarding item 4 that I didn't have to replace, could the previous system's relay which worked with 50W 4500K be used safely with the new 35W 6000K system? My limited understanding is that the new system has lower wattage therefore safe, however will the fuse inherited from the 50W system be inappropriate for a 35W system or am I just bloody confused?

The new 35W light is working well but does seem brighter than the other 50W light.

you should have no problems with the new 35w relays in place of the 50w.
with the 6000k bulbs you may find more reflection from signs a compared to the 4500k, some people on other light forums have noted that the higher temp may wash out a bit I would be interested in what you find

Will "relay" my impressions soon. Having a hybrid system until the the other 50W light blows will muddy the difference tho.  Wot thuh

The new setup will plug into the old relay. The old one looks like an analogue balast (integrated igniter) the new one has a slimline digital balast and a separate igniter when initially firing up. Different K values come from different bulbs. 35 w and 55 w systems usually use the same bulb but use a 35 w or 55w ballast. I have 70 w system and it uses bigger ballasts and noticeably heavy duty bulbs
