I am thinking of putting some smaller driving lights on my ST1100, are there some better than others? But that also don't cost the earth?

Is there a particular wattage I should be looking for?

And I am also keen for suggestions for simple fitting ideas?

I was contemplating something like this:

I had a quick look at that Ebay page, not obvious where it would fit on the ST. I wouldn't like to fit it to the Tupperware.

I may also be wrong, but I think they need to be connected in such a way that they have a separate switch to the normal running lights.

Hey Streak I have mine fitted down on the front wheel just like that photo on ebay and wire up just like the head light.

The higher they are fitted the better. The fork mounted led on mine are used as DRL the spotties are under the mirror mounted and over the mirror mounted. There has been a lot of information posted on the ST-Owners forum in the US and here http://www.my-mc.com/messages/1/12.html?1316894043. There is also a bit on here as well

I've looked in to this as well and I have concluded that I want some Hella FF50's and I'll mount them using Police light brackets that I need to get hold of.

The Police lighting brackets would be the easiest fitting method and price would depend on where you got them from.

In SA Driving/Spot lights can only work on high beam and have to be wired correctly and you need a switch to turn then on/off as well plus a relay. Most decent kits will have wiring and relay included.

DRL's have their own issues. Not sure how the rules apply to a bike but on a car DRL's and headlight can't be on at the same time. DRL's have to be the same height (volvo cars have them as standard) as headlights and 25 watts is the maximum. There's an ADR ruling on that so they have to comply after a certain date.

55 Watts is sufficient, I have a pair of Narva lights and they work well on a nasty back road on the way to work at still dark o'clock. The police mounts are ideal.

The limiting factor is the diameter of the light, and the mounting method.

I used the Narva compac 80 55w driving lights for a while before Queensland destroyed one. They make a noticeable difference and are well worth while. Like Brock mentions, I would go bigger if possible as the beam pattern generally has better spread as well as penetration. I am now using the compac 100s which are round and can be readily converted to HIDs late on (well mine are already done). How you mount it will determine what you can do. The police mounts allow you to run 175mm driving lights easily.

so how do the police brackets mount? and where would i source them from? i dont really want some big bulky light that is going to look ugly either, something compact would be more appealing

The police brackets are hard to come by now. The last ones I heard of have been snaffled up going by discussion on here. They mount using some longer bolts to hold on the mirror - I had them on my bike with the driving lights on them, as well as the CB antenna. No reason why a bracket out of strap steel could not be made up for either above or below mirror mounting. I am sure a few memebrs have tried different ways of mounting driving lights so can provide pictures.

So my HID driving lights are ugly and unappealing

Your friendly Honda Stealer will be able to source them for you, (or maybe cheaper from the states) also you will need replacement bolts. They fit on the mirror mounts. Photos shortly.

The bit holding the light is home made, as the supplied one hit the fairing

Streak with your statement about not wanting larger lights, don't forget that it is not necessarily the wattage that makes the difference. You want a good design reflector on the light to throw light down the road, and smaller lights don't necessarily have these, unless you want to spend some dollars to get a high end light.

Question about the police light brackets, do I have to cut the plastic at all to fit them?

I would like the extra light, but I would like to avoid hacking into the bike unless absolutely necessary

I have been eyeing off the hella FF50 as a possible for my lights

The Hellas are popular. They can also be converted to HID later on if you feel like it.
