Went to Warrnambool this morning

I was in 2 lane traffic in Warrnambool, approaching Gateway Plaza shopping centre.
Guy in the left lane was yapping away on his phone as the car in front of me passed him...
Driver in front started waggling his finger at the other... got a bird for his effort.
As I overtook, the guy still on the phone, I waggled a finger as well.... ditto for the bird. I wasn't impressed.
Car behind me beeped, so I accelerated and pulled in front of phoner to give following car room to pass.
I was  watching in the mirrors...When the overtaking car was alongside the phoner, he started beeping
and flapping his hand around as well, so the phoner  took his hand off the wheel, put the phone
in his left hand, and extended his entire arm out the window and flipped a magnificent 3rd bird to the other driver.
 
You know, Cops in unmarked cars don’t like that?

But then, unlike us ordinary road users, they have the power to do something about attitudes like that.

Must admit, as he was directed to park it, I was smiling as well. .. and the driver in front of me was doing arm-pumps as well.

Fine for using mobile while driving is pretty hefty now, plus loss of points.
Wonder what the penalty for hands free driving is?

Not sure of amount of penalty, as I only use my phone when I get to my destination.
Missed calls?... too bad, can call them back later.

No hands on the wheel, Dangerous Driving. Not noticing a police car next to you, Driving without due care and attention. Flying the bird, extending body part out of the car, inciting road rage.

Lets do a licence check , drug and drink check, while we are at it lift the bonnet, check tyres...

it's amazing how many drivers hold their mobile while driving!
I see at least one per day, on the way to work.
Moms, business people and tradies, yapping away without care of getting caught and oblivious to me staring right at them...
I used to have a regular taxi driver for fly-in-fly-out, arrangement for 5 yrs that did the same and he HAD a hands free unit, new in the box never used... I could never get a logical answer as to why he never used it....

I reckon even a hands-free is a distraction.  Your mind is engaged with another location, so a lot less than 100% of your attention is being used for all the computation required for safe, competent driving.

Talking is one thing, but texting obviously takes mind and eyes away from the road

If you have passengers on board in a tin top OR even a Pillion on the Bike - is one not distracted conversing?

If in a Tin Top, 4WD or Truck or Coach - the use of a CB is in the same category, one hand off the wheel - sooooooooooooo ...

In my last job, while driving a work 4WD, I was talking to a colleague about spreadsheets and instructing him on how to write the formula. When I took the call at Deagon Deviation I was in the left lane. When I went under Nudgee Rd I was in the right lane. Don't remember indicating or choosing to change lanes or why I changed lanes. I hadn't taken my eyes off the road. Luckily it was mid morning and the road was quiet. That was the last in depth call I took while driving.

When I was young and took flying lessons it took a while before I could fly and talk (departure call in controlled airspace). It's the same thing with mobiles. I does not mix easy. At least in the air there is more room and flying takes presidence over talking (for a short time only)
