Expensive Holiday
« on: July 18, 2015, 01:41:12 PM »
As some of you may know I have been running a little hot and cold about a new wing and had basically decided no. Well Thursday afternoon I got an email from Bikesales to say a red 2014 wing had been listed in QLD with only 1,700 kms on it. I rang to find out the details. It was at a dealers in Brisbane and had been a Honda Australia Demo. As we were flying into Brisbane to start our holiday on Saturday I asked what time they were open to (thinking they would close about lunchtime) and was told 4.00 pm. As I thought we were arriving at 3.30 it would be too late for us. We were actually supposed to arrive at 3.15 but arrived at 2.45 so called in to look at it. Nice bike but left the dealer with a lot to think about. Over the weekend I basically decided no but knowing the salesman had my phone number and that he was off on Monday expected a call on Tuesday. The call came and I said it was wrong timing, wrong place and more than I wanted to pay for it. In the end I made him what I thought was a good offer for me but one that he would reject Well he rang back 45 minutes later accepting my offer.
So I paid a deposit subject to a test ride. Wednesday when we passed though Brisbane again I took it for a short ride and completed the purchase. See photo with Theresa and the salesman. So it is now ours to be picked up in September which is when I will have a clear spell to ride it home. Theresa and I fly will to Brisbane for the ride to Adelaide. Theresa will fly home from Adelaide and I will do the Nullarbor by myself.

The 99 GL1500 will be sold by order of the boss (the major condition for buying the 1800) and lack of space. The ST1300 stays for solo riding.

this from the guy who gave advice not to buy a Goldie....

Sabie,
Sorry if you interpreted my post as saying don't buy a Goldwing that is not what I was saying and I certainly paid a lot less then $36,000.
The 3 main reasons why I am upgrading from the 1500 to an 1800 are:-
1. ABS
2. Fuel Injection as against carbs
3. The ease of removing the back wheel should one need to when out and about

Theresa is really keen on having a heated pillion seat.

Things I am not happy with(considering the price) but can do something about:-
1. No 12 V outlet other than the accessories connection points at the fusebox
2. No Tyre pressure monitoring
3. The poor location of the tool kit
4. Although I didn't check have a feeling it has straight and not 90 degree valve stems.

First impressions from the short test ride are that it is nicer at very slow speeds than the 1500. The salesman said it had a lower centre of gravity than the 1500 but I had doubted that.
One thing I don't think I can do anything about is using all the CB controls that are not connected to anything.

Thanks Brian
I will be transferring my Starcom system from the 1500 to the 1800.
I actually prefer the external speakers to having the music through the helmet I just have to remember not to sing along loudly when Theresa is with me or she gets my singing through the intercom (painful).
It will also be nice to plug in a memory stick instead of listening to cassettes. On long rides I would often forget to change the cassette when getting petrol so would listen to the same cassette several times in a days riding.

Hi Brian,
I currently have a Starcom digital fit to both my ST1300 and GL1500, this allows the use of the same helmet set up on both bikes. Starcom has a lead to connect it into the system on the 1500. It works well on the 1500 and I assume will also work on the GL1800 headsets but shall check with Dale.

Well after 5,074 kms, 305 litres of petrol ($487) the GL1800 is now at home in Perth.
Theresa and I flew to Brisbane on a Friday night where my brother picked us up and dopped us at the Ibis Motel a block or two from Brisbane Motorcycles. So up early Saturday morning and across the road to Maccas for a quick breakfast before walking up the road to collect the 1800.
Topped it up with fuel and packed all our gear into what is actually less luggage space than the 1500 and headed for home.
Two sets of traffic lights almost next to the hotel had us on the Inner City Bypass ad then the new Legacy Tunnel meaning the next traffic lights were at Warwick where we topped up with fuel.
Onto Goondiwindi for lunch before heading south to Narrabri.
A cabin in the Narrabri Highway Tourist Village provided a hot shower before we headed to the RSL Club for a very nice dinner.
Sunday morning headed for Coonabarabran for breakfast. Just as we were gearing up to leave after breakfast Gadget pulled in to say hello on his eventful ride home from Balranald.
On through Mendooran via the back road to Dubbo for lunch and fuel then to West Wyalong to refuel before the long run across the Hay Plan. Overnighting in the well located Nicholas Royal Motel in the main st of Hay.
Monday saw us off to Victor Harbor, refueling at Ouyen and Tailem Bend.
We had some shower activity on the road in from Tailem Bend through Strathalbyn just to make life interesting but it was not enough to stop and put on wet weather gear so close to the end of the day.
Overnighting with friends Chris and Steve in Victor.
Tuesday Chris drove Theresa to Adelaide to catch a plane home while I headed to Melbourne with Steve in his F520 ute where we stayed at Coburg. Wednesday morning we picked up a 25Kva gen set (about 1 tonne) and headed back to Victor.
Thursday was a lay day for me as Steve had some commitments.
Friday saw Steve (on his GL1500 he purchased from me) and I head for Kimba bypassing Adelaide by using the great bike roads through Hahndorf, Birdwood and Williamstown.
Dinner at the Kimba pub and a bed at the Kimba Motel Roadhouse got us through to the morning when I headed for Border Village and Steve returned home via Horrocks Pass.
A couple of uneventful days saw me overnight at Border Village and Norseman (Railway Hotel $90 including light breakfast, a great old Art Deco Hotel) before arriving home on Monday night.
The garage is now full   :grin and the bank account empty  :'(
