Yet Another ST1100 Tank Bag Question
« on: August 19, 2015, 09:11:09 PM »
I have started thinking about doing a lap of Australia when I retire. This will probably be on the cheap camping off road when I can. I am looking for a tank bag I can use to carry cooking utensils and food.

I have read previous posts on bagster, chase harper etc. They look great but with the Australia dollar situation the costs are outrageous to buy and ship.

I can buy a 60 litre seat bag for less than the cost of the Sellerie/ Bagster tank cover.  Then add the tank bag and shipping costs. We are being price gauged!

My question: What tank bags do people use that are normally sold in Australia ( eg Rjays) that work on the ST?  By that I mean can be secured tightly, easy to remove for petrol and do not damage the tank.

I would prefer a simple large tank bag (to 30L) with a clear plastic map cover.

Regards

A tank bag would be ok for a small amount of food, but not for carrying a lot of gear, as it will interfere with the handlebar travel, and your seating position.

If you are riding solo, them a bag behind you would be a better option.

Thanks Brock. I have had two layer tank bags on previous bikes without any trouble. I rode two-up for 15 years with my wife (before kids) carrying everything for camping (Oz and UK).

The ST in comparison is spacious!

When I have my bagster on, I find that full right lock turns off my UHF, GPS and SR10. (controlled by a switch on the right grip[police switch grip])

I've bought a bit of gear from Thirdgear before, and for the price, I've found them pretty good, but I've got no experience of their tank bags here:-

Can't argue with the price and the features seem in part to be what you're looking for.

Thanks Guys. There are many tank bags on offer on eBay, Dhgate and the web in general. I will not buy until I can get some feedback on their use for the ST or try it myself locally.

That is why I am interested in what others have actually used.

I would consider buying a bagster second hand.

I've just bought one of these to go with the Bagster tank bag I got from Streak a while ago, haven't tried it yet though, will let you know when I do.  My baby is at the mechanic's a the moment getting a carby rebuild.

looks like it would be a pita having to remove seat to get to fuel cap. but I maybe wrong.

Hi Wendyl,
the UNIVERSAL TANK BAG HARNESS is at the right price (my kids call me a cheapskate). I really like the mounting points just it looks a little short.

Do you know anybody that has used it on the St1100?

I would think some quick release clips would be the minimum change,

If it takes a bagster bag  . . They all have the same mounting points . . So it should fit . . You can always ask the supplier . . However the universal harness looks like it would cover the 1100's fuel flap . . Looks good for the 1300 tho . .

That looks as if the rear of harness would be secured right over the flap to the 1100 fuel tank.

That could be a problem. the bagter harness has a zip flap at the rear.

Don't stress on the 1100 having plastic "tank cover" ... Wombat and Yorkie as well as others just glued rare earth magnets onto the under side lined up with where the magnets are in the tank bag. Makes super strong grip and strap is only used then to stop people grabbing it off. I used Wombat's on trip back from Toowoomba and was great. His was a small third gear as anything larger fouls my handlebars.
Helpful hint of you do this .... test the polarity of the magnets to make sure they are attracting the ones in the bag BEFORE you glue them on.

And we came to this conclusion how????

Not much good if your bags jumps off before you can tie it down I guess..

Hi All,
just an update on the bags situation. I have ended up getting:

1. A second-hand tankster bag and cover (black in excellent condition- thanks Dick)
2. A H2W clothes sack (XL - still at last years price). This is enormous but can scrunched down with the straps fitted.

I have investigated the following:

1. Kriega universal quick release harness: this will work with the ST and is probably easier than the Bagster. The US 20/30 packs are just not really tank bags.
2. KAPPA/ GIVI universal harness: no good with the ST fuel cap and not quick release
3. Bagster EASYROAD Universal harness: I reckon this one will work but need one to try. It must be the EASYROAD Part# 1582UU not the EASYTRAIL which is shorter with an extra 2 mounting points at the back and quite often shown in pics for the EASYROAD. Refer to the bagster catalogue for details.

These bags with the panniers and top box gives me enough space for a round Australia trip on retirement.

Regards
