Bad week for Shiney and Carrol
« on: August 23, 2015, 11:24:20 PM »
Well it has been a bad week for me and Carrol :'(

Thursday night (13/08/2015)

Carrol was in a traffic accident :eek
She had been driving along when her GPS started to give crazy directions. She made sure she had a fair gap between herself and the car in front and looked down to see what it was on about.
When she looked up she found the car in front was breaking hard for an orange light :eek
Unfortunately there wasn't enough time and distance to stop in time :'(

Carrol came out of it with only a few bruises and is doing well :runyay
(and luckily we had full comprehensive insurance through Youi) :thumbsup

Friday (14/08/2015)

We borrowed my parents car and collected her stuff from the wreck. I dropped Carrol and her stuff at home and returned the parents car.
On the way home from my parents the ST started playing up :fp while holding the accelerator still the revs would shoot up then drop down lower then before, this was happening constantly over and over until I got home where the bike stalled.

so I did a bit of research... all signs point to the issue being the 5 way connecter.

Saturday (15/08/2015)

I started pulling the bike down to check out the 5 way connector.
The tank was lifted up, the top of the air box and air filter was removed as was the funnels all without an issue, however...

I just couldn't remove the 8 screws going through the bases of the funnels that hold down the bottom of the air box.
(Without the bottom of the air box being removed I couldn't get to the 5 way connector) :cuss :cuss :cuss :cuss

So I gave a call to Gadget who came around with his awesome tools :hatwave :-++ :-++ :-++
Gadget gave it a try (he even broke the head of a pozidriv screwdriver :eek) those screws were stuck! (and that man is a bloody legend for coming to my aid)
The only option left was to take it to a mechanic but as it was Saturday afternoon they were all shut :fp

Sunday (16/08/2015)

Mechanic shut

Monday (17/08/2015)

Youi assessor checked out the damaged vehicle.

I took the bike to the mechanic but he was booked out for days so I took it to Team Moto as they could fit it in.
They removed the 5 way connector and as it was clear they put it all back together and advised it was the Map Sensor :|||| :|||| :||||

So back home and the search for a Map Sensor began.
I called ST2UP who put me on to Atoyot. (Thanks mate :hatwave)

Atoyot is another of the LEGENDARY members, he removed the Map Sensor from the ST he is wrecking and posted it to me before the post office shut :-++ :-++ :-++

Tuesday (18/08/2015)

The Youi assessor called and advised the ute was a write-off.
After a bit of a discussion we came to a figure of $3500.

I began to pull the bike down to get it ready for the Map Sensor replacement but found the screws were again stuck :cuss :cuss :cuss so I got my dad to give me a lift down the road to get a impact driver.

With the impact driver I was able to get 7 of the 8 screws out but the last one was to damaged and the head became stripped.
the only thing for it was to drill it out :fp

Bottom of the air box removed

Other side

Drilled out screw

Wednesday (19/08/2015)

The Map Sensor arrived from Atoyot and was replaced without an issue :thumbsup

With the new Map Sensor installed the bike was back to it's usual awesome self :runyay :runyay :runyay and I was able to make it to work that night.

Thursday & Friday (20/08/2015 - 21/08/2015)

Work
The money from Youi arrived in my account

Saturday (22/08/2015)

We began the search for a new car for Carrol.
After a bit of research we decided on what we were looking for and went out to look at a few cars and a couple of dealers.

The first place had already sold the car we wanted to look at but hadn't taken down the add, and the second place had sold the car we wanted to look at about 30 minutes before we got there :fp
So we went riding around looking at other dealers for the remainder of the day but didn't find anything that we wanted.

When we got home I jumped on the internet and began the search again :CB--
I found a nice car for sale privately about 1.5 hours away and organized to see it the following afternoon :phone

Sunday (23/08/2015)

We spent the morning trying to help Carrol's brother with his bike but had no luck fixing the issue :'(
Then we rode down the coast to check out the car :blu13

Well the car was great so I made an offer of $4800 and a deal was struck :thumbsup

So now we are the new owners of an awesome 2003 Nissan Pulsar Q Hatch :runyay :runyay :runyay

So all in all it was a bad week but it ended well, we got a new car, the ST is running well and Carrol is back to normal :thumbsup

Cheers

For the screws, one needs a JIS screw driver, its a bit different to pozi drive and philips head which can chew out the screw heads

Whew- traumatic!!

You gotta wonder what it is with those #$%^ JIS screws.  It's about the only place you find them on the bike that I'm aware of.
And they're buried in there where you can't see the little "bump" (dimple?) anyway.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I had the same problems with the bolts in the throttle bodies. I thinks the best thing to do when 're-assembling is just use a blue threadlocking compound, as that should stop any type of seizure of the threads. Maybe even be whorthwhile in swapping Philips head bolts out for hex heads as well. Glad all is now sorted out for you now! It's a pain with one vehicle is down and out, but heaps worse when it's both!

Perhaps consider anti-seize compound, and I do like the idea of swapping the JIS head screws for either hex heads or cap head screws, as plenty of people seem to have had problems with getting these screws out easily.

Probably a zinc or aluminium based anti-seize if any, but I have an almost ACD like attitude to situations of different metals and the possibility of that black magic galvanic corrosion. Not saying that's what necessarilly makes some of these bolts seize, but I just prefer blue threadlocker! Call me pedantic, but I'm just waiting for my water to air intercooler on my Landcruiser to become an aside and develop pinholes. How's that for negative psychology?

Why are Phillips head type screws and bolts still in use anyway? I know lots of people butcher them by using the wrong size screwdriver, and sure, the old hex bolt can get chewed out too, but it's got to be less likely than those cheese forged Phillips head things.

Hi Shiney!
What's a Map Sensor?  It sounds like part of the GPS system.  Could it be related to Carrol's faulty GPS?  Call me paranoid, but I think you guys have been attacked by some sort of GPS bug.

The MAP sensor converts engine vacuum pressure to an electrical signal so the computer knows how much load the engine is under.

David and Carrol, u r shining examples of resilience and positive attitude and resourcefulness in finding your way past these traumas. And how good is this club 2 help wherever possible. 4 example I know if I can't figure something Honda out I can always "Ask Atoyot" - that wreck of his is a goldmine. Well done every1 - you're champions! And Carrol, I hope your aches and bruises disappear quickly.
